A Few Quick Book Reviews

A Solitude of Wolverines by Alice Henderson: Wow, I loved this book! It was so exciting and full of tense moments right from the get-go and I was completely pulled in. Alex Carter is a wildlife biologist who jumps on the opportunity to study the elusive wolverine- even though it means being isolated in the wilderness in a ramshackle building for the winter. Carter is more at home in the wilderness than the city though, and is excited about the prospect, especially after surviving a narrow escape from a gunman. She was ready for a change of scenery and change of pace. She arrives to find that not everyone is as excited about her being there as she is though, and a slew of mysterious and dangerous events unfold, with a twist thrown in for fun. This book kept me guessing and after I finished it I pulled up Google and immediately searched to see if there were any more in this series. Unfortunately, not yet, but I am keeping my fingers crossed!

The Tourist Attraction by Sarah Morgenthaler: So, another one that I loved! I was thoroughly entertained by this book, 100%! Graham and Zoe are nerdy adorable goofballs, who have great chemistry, and interesting characters. I loved that they were not always predictable, that this book was not totally formulaic and that it too, could surprise me. Graham and Zoe as well as most of the other characters, were endearing, although I did have a few raise the eyebrow moments over some of Graham’s behaviors. Mostly though, I liked him. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series, although I will wait until winter comes back around again. Overall, super cute.

Wintering: A Season with Geese by Stephen Rutt: This book was a quiet, cozy kind of read. A celebration of winter and of well, geese. Stephen explores his homeland and these birds, in a book that makes you love geese, if you didn’t before. I enjoyed this book, but I am a total bird nerd, and I love being on a hike in the winter, the quiet whisper of snow around me, crunching slightly under my boots, being in the moment.. and then the raucous call of a flock of geese soars overhead, breaking the stillness and silence, reminding me that I am still in this world. It was a good read, but I think you might have to be interested in birds to enjoy it.

Wyatt’s Birthday

So if you read here regularly then you probably knew this post was coming… how could I not blog about my baby’s birthday? For us, this birthday brought us full circle for a pandemic year. His birthday party last year was a blessing, as it was the last time we saw our family because a week later, we were all locked down. And here we are a year later – a trying year to be sure, with some tough events and the loss of my uncle, but we are back where we started and dare I say, things are starting to look a little better!

This year, we celebrated with just the three of us, with a day full of driveway visits and video chats. All day people who love Wyatt were stopping by or calling to watching him open their gifts, and Wyatt was not feeling neglected, that is for sure.

But before we got to this fun stuff, the morning started with a little excitement.

Not dandruff, not lice, but fluffy kinetic snow. Which completely bonded to his hair. He thought he was just playing in the snow I guess, and rolled around in it. When I tried to brush it out with my hand, it didn’t budge. So I tried a comb. Then a brush. And none of them worked. I started to panic, thinking I was going to have to shave his head, but first I called my hairstylist sister-in-law who like a genius suggested Dawn dish soap, which WORKED! So if this happens to a kid in your life, now you know. Dawn dish soap to the rescue.

Anyway, after a day of presents and family visits from afar, and chicken strips and fries and rainbow cake, kiddo was tired, and so was I. But we had decided to keep the party rolling all week, a sort of slow moving celebration.

We spent a day playing with his gifts, including a trip down memory lane with this Easy Bake Oven he got.

Then Friday Billy took the day off and we headed to the zoo, the choice of our birthday boy. We saw a few different animals this time – the wolves still eluded us but we had fun with all the peacocks strolling about! We love having a membership, since we can spend as much time or as little time there as we want.

I think despite having a different sort of birthday this year, my little guy still had quite the week! And I can’t believe he is 6! Time sure flies.

Hello everyone! It’s a bright and sunny Sunday, although still very cold here. I am just trying to enjoy the light! Last week was a huge catch up week – trying to restore order to our house that had been uprooted for a month due to different projects. We did our basic curriculum without a special added theme and had a few fun days in there too, with a trip to the zoo and a day where Wyatt and I just played with his new stuff.

Read Last Week:

Oo I loved this book! I always love the Rockton books though, honestly. I think this is such a unique series and I love reading about this fictional community hidden away in the far north of Canada.

Reading This Week:

I will be finishing up Mission In Paris 1990 this week – so far it is very interesting! And I will also be starting Animal Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland. I will probably read this one a little every week, not straight through, but I am looking forward to reading it. Plus that cover is beautiful!

Chit Chat Coffee Time Post – this has become my Saturday post, just a fun way to wind up our week.

Currently… March

Watching:

We started Tudor Monastic Farm, because we are such addicts of these BBC historical farm shows. We also watched Discovery of Witches, Criminal Minds reruns, and we also watched The Cecil Hotel on Netflix. That Elisa Lam story is so sad and confusing. That hotel really has quite a history though! Crazy.

My friend sent me this SNL skit the other day with a message that this was us and I had to laugh – it really is! Not cannibals, although this makes it look like I am saying that, but women who watch murder shows. And listen to the podcasts. Lol.

And that is about it from around these parts. Stay safe and have a good week everyone!

Chit Chat Coffee Time Post

I’m really enjoying these quick little snippet posts! I think Bella from Over the Teacups had a good idea with her posts that are conversational, like she is having tea with you, and I feel kind of like that is what these posts have become, a little catch up of our week over coffee. So grab a cup and feel free to share with me in the comments about your own week!

I am typing today from my office! Billy got it basically done, enough for me to use, and I am in love with it. And so is Wyatt – I didn’t anticipate him wanting to be in here all the time too, but that is ok. I am glad that he is enjoying the new space as well, and I have always been a person who feels there is no room a child can’t be in and play in and feel like it is their room as well. So there is a basket of notebooks and crayons, a toy or two, and then the other day he wanted to do his school work in here. So we did! I will do a post about the office after I get the curtains hung and some of the art as well; the totally empty white wall over Dash’s tank bothers me. We are hanging shelving on the wall behind the desk – which for now is an old table until Billy gets a chance to build a desk for me. He is getting a big break for now though!

This week was also Wyatt’s birthday week! It turned into a week long slow celebration. Tuesday was his actual birthday, and he had video chat and driveway visits from loved ones, and a big day of opening gifts. Lots of surprises and goodies for this kiddo! We had another day where we just played with his toys and read his books, then Friday Billy took a day off and we went out for a family day. We asked Wyatt what he wanted to do, and he requested the zoo again, so off we went.

My cousin gave Wyatt this Edgar Allen Poe doll. It cracks me up!

My mom also temporarily moved into my uncle’s condo – she is much closer now, like a ten minute drive instead of 30, and we can start getting her house ready to sell without her being in there. It just makes things so much easier for everyone, and we are so grateful to my cousin for allowing us that opportunity. My mom is also double vaccinated now so yay! I am going to pop over tomorrow morning (masked) and help her set up an area for my niece to use as her homeschool space. My mom has been pretty isolated for so long now, with the exception of her bubble of my brother, his wife, and my niece, that we are trying to get her used to what is our new normal slowly – like getting used to people being in masks, etc. It will be good to spend some time with her. So now, my mom, dad, stepmom, Billy’s parents, two aunts, and an uncle are all double vaccinated. My sister-in-law got her first one on Thursday, and three of my cousins have either one vaccine or are done. Billy, my brother Devin, and I are in the next phase so that should be coming up pretty quickly.

And if we were really at coffee together, I would probably be sharing about my plants and lizards, so here is my new plant baby, a raven ZZ. I have wanted one for a long time so I finally went for it. I got it from Amazon actually, and I am pretty happy with Amazon’s plants so far. This one arrived in great shape, and I sent one as a surprise to my friend in PA, who was tired of seeing so much snow, and hers arrived in good shape as well. (I sent her a rattlesnake plant, part of the prayer plant family because I love them)

And then Harry being all dramatic, just because..

How about you all? How was your week?

Currently..March

It is time for Anne In Residence’s monthly Currently post where we answer one word prompts about different things we are doing and feeling. I always love the insight I gain from these, taking inventory of my own life. This month we are looking at what we are choosingimaginingmakingrecommending, and wearing.

Just a reminder:  Still Life, With Cracker Crumbs occasionally uses affiliate links. This means that if you click or make a purchase from a link provided I may receive a very small commission at no cost to you.  Thank you for your support.

Let’s begin!

Choosing: My husband basically finished my office refresh on Sunday! We still need to get new outlet covers, caulk, just little stuff, so it’s basically ready for use! All new paint, some wallpaper, all new trim, curtains, and a rug and it is a totally different room! Now the real fun begins – choosing the decorations and furniture! Right now I have an old table in there that is my temporary desk, my mom’s old sewing table as a stand for Dash’s tank, a Himalayan Salt rock lamp I got as a gift a hundred years ago that Wyatt loves, the trash can that is not a trash can that my grandma used to keep yarn in, and my aunt Barb’s old chair from when she worked for the schools. When she retired they let her keep it, and I have it now. It is not fancy, old public school 1970s furniture (maybe 60s?) but I like it because it was hers and it meant enough to her that she wanted it when she left.

Imagining: Warm spring days, picnics, traveling and visiting again, trips to museums, and daydreaming about our upcoming camping trip this summer. We reserved a campsite through hipcamp and it is a totally private campsite, only just the one, on acres of vineyard. It is on the west side of Michigan, and I am already making plans for what we should take and eat and what we need.

Making: For Valentine’s Day my stepmom gave me a surprise gift! A set of felting materials, from felt to little cookie cutter like things and some Styrofoam. She had already given me a little needle before, so I didn’t need that. I started off sort of with an easier project – felted geodes! These were wet felted as multi-layered balls, then sliced open to reveal the colors and pattern inside. It was pretty neat! I still need to needle felt it a bit to firm it up a bit, but this was fun. I will probably do a few more as good practice pieces.

Recommending: Ok so this is sort of a weird one. Pretty Litter. We have senior cats and I unfortunately have to have a litter box available on the main level and it is in the office, although it makes me crazy. Everyday, having to clean a billion times. So I started looking for more options, and decided to give Pretty Litter a try. I figured it wouldn’t hurt. Surprisingly, the cats loved it more than their usual stuff, and I love the fact that it is faster to clean, there is no dust, and so far, no tracking! It’s almost like a miracle. It has only been two weeks so I can’t say what it will be like in two more weeks, when I am supposed to completely dump it and how it will maintain until then but for now I am impressed. I bought one of those hidden litter boxes/cabinet things and that will be set up today so, fingers crossed, it will be like not having a box up here.

Wearing: Nothing exciting over here. Right now, comfy wear around the house clothes, warm socks, that sort of thing. Colorful nail polish is about all I’ve got for this one. I am looking forward to wearing my converse shoes again soon, once spring is here.

Last week was full of construction in the office, early mornings, sunny days, and finishing up our snow unit. I have to say, I am over snow right now. I am excited to move on to our March studies! Wyatt’s birthday is Tuesday – it kind of blows my mind that he will be six.

Read Last Week:

I finished up A Solitude of Wolverines and I have to say, I was glued to the pages I was so enthralled. I loved it! It was exciting and unpredictable and I loved the main character! The action and mystery start within the first few pages and it just stays riveting throughout. I am also halfway through A Stranger in Town, which I am loving as well.

Reading This Week:

I am finishing up A Stranger in Town, then I plan to start Mission in Paris 1990, which I received for review.

Chit Chat Coffee Time Post – Just a little bit of what has been happening around here

Watched:

We started Discovery of Witches, season 2 and we are hooked. Like we can’t wait to start watching it at night. We even skipped our regular Friday night movie last night to watch it instead. We have also been watching some shows on Discovery +; I signed up for the free trial and we are debating whether or not we want to keep it. So far, we are enjoying it but I don’t think we will be committing. Wyatt is still watching his favorites, Gumboot Kids, Wild Kratts, Sesame Street, Molly of Denali. We had to buy him a Count t-shirt the other day, he just loves the Count! He very rarely asks for anything at all, but he asked for that so we had to do it.

And that is about it from our corner of Michigan! How are you all doing? Stay safe my friends!

Chit Chat Coffee Time Post

It’s been a week y’all. I am blaming the full moon – I just feel like everything was sort of crazy and I was all off my routine. Billy has been working hard on the office, and he said it should be move in ready this weekend! Yay! It has been so long since we have done any major house projects that I had forgotten how they take over everything. The rest of the house is a mess, with everything displaced or random bits of wood or painting equipment and whatnot strewn throughout. Our house is small so space is a premium around here, and when we have a whole room out of commission it gets nuts.

This was me working at the table last night: Dash in a temporary tank shoved on there, crumbs, masks, various homeschool papers and plans piled around me. I did like looking up and seeing Dash right there though, that was neat.

I’m not the only one who enjoys seeing Dash so close. Dash being out here has all of a sudden become an issue for Maggie, one of our cats. She is a clever little thing – I think most tuxedo cats are honestly. The other two watch Dash, but Maggie figured out yesterday how to push open the tank lid! I just happened to be there so I could get it shut before she got in or Dash got out! He has a safer tank sitting right next to it, but he is so quick and little that Billy and I both need to transfer him in case he leaps all over the place and gets away. It’s not the ideal setup for Dash, with lighting or tank size or anything, so I will be relieved when he is in his permanent setup in the office. I ended up moving him into Wyatt’s bedroom last night – I didn’t want Maggie to break into his house while we were sleeping!

Wyatt also has been getting up way early! Like 6:15 Thursday, then 5 am Friday, although he did go back to sleep thankfully. Thursday though he was full of energy – full moon energy I decided, since it was a full moon or close enough! He also wanted to play a game at 8:30 am, and I played despite needing all the coffee. He is usually playful and full of energy, but more so these past few days. Spring fever, maybe? I know I have spring fever!

The sun has been shining brightly the past few days, the days are a bit warmer, the snow is practically gone, and I am ready for spring. I realize this is premature as we still have March to get through, but I can’t help but dream of gardens and warmer days outside. I am getting ready to start our seeds in a week or two, and then yesterday I took our flannel sheets off and instead of replacing them with another set of flannel, I put on jersey sheets. I also took off our dark plaid flannel duvet cover, and switched it with our blue striped ticking cover. Wyatt and I wiped down the walls (well really me but he wanted to help so he sat on the bed and did what he could reach), we threw open the window for 15 minutes (it was still 39 degrees), and I gave the room a good spring cleaning.

Then this morning we went for an early morning drive, and when we neared the lake, I had Billy stop so I could get out for a minute. The morning was mild, just a bit of winter bite left in the air, and I heard the trilling of red-winged blackbirds, a sign of spring around here. The ice was still thick near the shore, but there was much less further out.

How about you? Any signs of spring yet where you are?

Book Tag: All Creatures Great and Small

When I saw this book tag post on Stargazer, I knew I had to do it too. First because I have loved the James Herriot series All Creatures Great and Small since I was a little girl. I even “named” our homeschool James Herriot Primary. Then second, because I am a big animal lover. Be sure to check out Stargazer’s post too, she has some amazing stories and photos!

  1. What is your favorite animal?

Woodland animal? Desert? Arctic? This all makes a difference, I feel like I have so many! I will keep it simple though, and just name my top two – foxes and rabbits. I’m still considering my tattoo of the dewey decimal number for Vulpes Vulpes.. If we are at the zoo though, the animal I get excited to go see are the zebras. I dig them too.

I have caught glimpses of foxes twice in my life, so fast and quick I was not entirely sure I saw them at all. Both times at twilight, when the light itself is playing tricks. The first time at Shenandoah National Park, one of my very favorite places on earth, and another time in the woods nearish my home. I find them so fascinating, so beautiful. I don’t have a photo of my own handy, so I will share a photo from the Instagram account Juniper Fox. I love cute little Elmwood- and all the work that this account does for animals!

2. What got you interested in animals?

Probably my mom originally. I always loved them when I was really little, I was always drawn to stories with animals and cartoons about animals – like the Canadian cartoon, The Green Forest. We live just close enough to Canada that we were able to watch all the cartoons, including this one. Then one Christmas, when I was around 8 or so, my mom gave me the book series by James Herriot and that was it for me. I was all in.

3. Do you have a pet?

I currently have many. Three rescue cats, 1 leopard gecko, and an anole. Miso, Maggie, and Marlow all came from the shelter I used to volunteer for before I had Wyatt. All three of them have different stories – Miso was from a hoarder house, with over 100 Himalayans in various states of care and neglect sadly. We were able to find just about all of them homes or rescues, and rehab them though so that was a great success story. Maggie was a stray kitten, and Marlow was abandoned in an apartment – his family moved, leaving him behind. Then Harry and Dash are pandemic pets – I discovered a love for little lizards during this past year. I have also had three very special dogs in my life, who are sadly all passed on now – Molly, Chevis, and Penny.

Marlow (my little old man kitty now), Dash, Harry, and Maggie. Miso is at the top of this post.

4. What is your favorite nonfiction book about animals?

I would say My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell, and of course, the All Creatures Great and Small series. When Wyatt and I started our homeschool year this year, I bought him a special book to celebrate. I am going to start reading it to him this spring, and I hope it becomes a keepsake book for him.

5. What is your favorite fiction book about animals?

I have read so many, especially when I was a kid. This is a tough one!! For sure Watership Down, my favorite book of all time. I also loved the Big Red series when I was younger. I still dream about one day having an Irish Setter running around my house. I did have an English Setter, Penny. She was another shelter rescue and was the sweetest girl.

6. Have you been part of any animal conservation efforts?

I volunteered for years at our city animal shelter, and served on the board of an animal rescue as well. I donate money to various animal conservation agencies when I can, most recently the Wolf Conservation Center in New York and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.

7. What is your top bucket list dream that your would do with animals?

I have quite a few!! I would love to stay at the Giraffe Manor in Kenya, to camp with the wolves at the Wolf Conservation Center (I feel like I could do this one!), and there is always that dream of owning land and opening a rescue.

8. Have you ever dressed up like an animal?

Absolutely, yes. Lol. And my son in his 6 years has dressed up as animals for at two Halloweens. He was the cutest skunk ever!

Do you love animals? Feel free to join in and be sure to link back to the original creator Cari.

Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz
It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

I can’t believe it is almost March. In just a short time, Wyatt will be a big time 6 year old. It’s hard to believe at this time last year, I was getting ready for our little family getaway to Western Michigan, and for his lumberjack themed birthday party. It seems like it was a lifetime away. I am so thankful for that party because a week after we had it our state went into lockdown, and we had at least just spent time with everyone that we love. This year we are just going to celebrate with the three of us, and schedule video chats with the family. I am trying to think of something fun we can do for his birthday too. I’ll think of something. And while we are not going on a little trip right now, I did make reservations for a small trip this summer! I found a campsite through Hipcamp that sounds amazing! It is totally private, only one family at a time, one campsite, located on 30+ acres of vineyard on the west side of Michigan. (Here is the link if you want to check it out!) I have not slept in a tent in a hundred years, and it will be Wyatt’s first time, so I am both excited and slightly nervous. Any advice/tips/tricks for camping with kids is appreciated!

Read Last Week:

I absolutely loved The Tourist Attraction!! It was super cute and the main characters were adorably dorky goofballs. It took longer to read than I had anticipated since I kept leaving my Kindle uncharged. Super frustrating. I am hoping to get a short review post up this week of a few books and this will be on there. As for Braving the Wilderness, I started out strong but have sort of lost interest. I just feel like I get the point of what she is saying at about halfway through the book. It’s good but I probably won’t finish it for a while.

Reading This Week:

I love this series by Armstrong so I am super excited to start it! It’s on my Kindle though, so it will probably take me longer since I am terrible about charging it… And I am finally starting Solitude of Wolverines, which I actually checked out as a physical book from the library. I am looking forward to reading both of these!

Homeschool: Snow!

An “Otterly” Fun Valentine’s Day

Snowy Reads for Snowy Days

Watching and Listening:

We finished up All Creatures Great and Small – and I want more. I think it was fantastic and I absolutely loved how they were able to keep true to the original series as well as the books in the new version of the show. It was excellent. We also started the show Traces on Britbox, and are also watching lots of Hometown, probably because we are in the middle of our own big house refresher right now. Wyatt has been watching Wild Kratts, Molly of Denali, and Sesame Street. This kid loves the Count and Cookie Monster. As for podcasts, I am listening to Morbid, Ologies, Homemaker Chic, and Lore. With Wyatt, we are listening to the Naturalist Kids Podcast, the Molly of Denali podcast, and Earth Rangers. Taylor Swift’s albums Evermore and Folklore are played almost on repeat around here, and when we mix it up we listen to Miranda Lambert (my husband’s favorite..), Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, Lord Huron, and Old Dominion lately.

And that is it from our snug little house today! What have you all been doing?

Stay safe and warm (or cool my southern hemisphere friends!)

Homeschool: Snow!

In addition to Wyatt’s regular curriculum, every month we focus on a different theme (or themes). This month is all about snow! I feel sort of like I dared Mother Nature with this one, as we have gotten more snow this month than we have all winter.

I haven’t blogged yet this month about our snow studies and I feel like we have done so much! We started the month by talking about well, snow. How it forms, different types of snowflakes, the life cycle of a snowflake, the basics of snow really.

We also did some great art projects. Wyatt loves painting and books so I tried to focus a lot this month on incorporating more of those into our month.

An online friend gifted Wyatt with the book Sneezy the Snowman for Christmas and he loved it so much that I wanted to use it this month as part of our studies. We read the book, discussed melting and freezing, worked on sequencing, and then followed it up with this great activity. This was Wyatt’s favorite thing we have done so far this month.

My little painter. He also painted two pictures, inspired by the books Snow Falls Karen Gardner and The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. (I did help him with painting Peter though, full disclosure in light of the whole North West controversy) We also did some extra studies with The Snowy Day, including sequencing just like we did with Sneezy the Snowman.

Then yesterday we read The Snow Globe Family and Snow Globe Wishes, which were both adorable. We followed up the readings with a little writing assignment, answering the question what would Wyatt do if he lived in a snow globe (answer: paint), and then he wanted to see an actual snow globe. How I don’t have one, I don’t know. So we made this spur of the moment, slapdash, what we had around the house version of one, using a jam jar, a small toy fox, some crystal beads, and then me, wielding a hot glue gun. The beads are too heavy so I need to add some glitter in there, but kiddo loves it, and that is all that matters.

I am going to do a huge resource round-up of printables next Saturday, after we finish up the month’s activities, so stay tuned for that! I will share the books we have read and videos we have watched though.

Books We Have Read So Far:

We have one more week left of our snow study, then in March we are mixing it up! Our own March Madness I guess.
