Comfy Cozy Christmas: Navigating Christmas Movie Review

Hello all! Welcome to the corner of the internet where we are going all out for the holidays this year! Today I want to talk about the delightful Hallmark movie Navigating Christmas.

So I know that a lot of people are not into Hallmark movies or shows, considering them too cheesy or corny or whatever. However, I am a huge fan. They are all just so happy and cheery and sometimes I need that. I don’t want a lot of drama; I want feel good. And this movie was a feel good film all the way!

From the Hallmark description:

Recently divorced Melanie and her son Jason visit a remote island for Christmas, only to find themselves running a real working lighthouse where she connects with the curt but cute owner.

Short but to the point!

This movie had a lot of elements that I loved and made me want to watch – a lighthouse vacation at CHRISTMAS (how awesome!!), an island named St. Nicholas Island, and of course, romance.

I was so excited to watch this. My husband thought it was hilarious that I was so geeked out over it, but he is a good sport and watched along.

This movie stars Chelsea Hobbs, a Canadian actress I was unfamiliar with until this movie. I looked over her film and television credits though and she stars in a series of Hallmark movies called The Martha Vineyard’s Mysteries and those are totally going on my to-watch list. It also stars Stephen Huszar, another new to me actor, but I really enjoyed his er…acting. Ok, I really did enjoy his acting, but also he was pretty easy on the eyes as well. He also seems to be in a mystery series, called the Ruby Herring Mysteries, so adding that as well!

So this movie has Melanie scrambling to find a fun way to celebrate the holidays after her ex-husband has to cancel his Christmas plans with their son Jason. She finds this lighthouse and think it looks perfect until she gets there, and learns that not only does she have to decorate the entire place for the holidays, she also has to run it! Thankfully, it is not an active lighthouse in the sense that she has to run the actual lifesaving aspects of it, so there is that. She is pretty peeved at first, then as she connects with the community and their Christmas spirit, she gets into it. Her son is still reluctant until he meets the mayor’s daughter, who totally has mermaid hair and no one mentions this at all, even though she lives on an island and could possibly be a mermaid. (spoiler: she is not) There is also one of those comfy cozy little diners that are full of joie de vivre, and this one seems to serve up some amazing looking pancakes. Like, I wanted pancakes while watching even though it was like 9 pm.

The island is full of Christmas traditions and I would 100% love to visit there, if it were a real place. I don’t want to share them because you will just have to watch and see!

I am a sucker for a good setting, and I think after watching Fisherman’s Friends the other day, I am in the mood for fisherman and boats and the sea. The setting was perfect for this. I feel like I see so many Christmas movies set in a snowy cabin in the woods or the mountains – which I also love – but I loved how this one was a bit different. The lighthouse was beautiful, and was exactly how I would like a vacation lighthouse to look. I had to do a little googling because I wanted to know where this lighthouse is located. What can I say, I am a Michigander and we love our water and lighthouses here. Even my little 8 year old is a fan.

Anyway, the lighthouse used in filming is a real lighthouse, located in Colwood, British Colombia, Canada, according to the website Atlas of Wonders. It is named the Fisgard Lighthouse, and shone its first light on November 16 (my birthday!!), 1860. You can tour the innkeeper’s house part of the lighthouse, which I will do if I ever make it over to that side of the world.

In true Hallmark Christmas movie fashion, this movie is low stakes, with a low level of drama but a high level of joy. I always say there is nothing happier than holiday romance, and this movie left me feeling cozy and cheery.

If you are looking for a Hallmark Christmas movie to watch this year, I highly recommend this one!

Comfy Cozy Christmas

Christmas Homeschool: Some of our plans for December!

What We Are Watching:

Let’s see…I feel like we have watched quite a bit! We usually binge watch but this past week we have been skipping around. We watched the British Ghosts, Father Brown’s newest season (BritBox), and Wheel of Time (Amazon Prime). We also watched another Hallmark Christmas movie last night – A Merry Scottish Christmas. It was pretty cute, but the best part was the castle, of course. I have a review coming up on this soon!

I also want to talk about the newest season of Father Brown and all the changes. Anyone else watch it or watching it? I have opinions…

And that is it for today! I hope you all are having a good one!

Christmas Homeschool!!

It’s that most magical time of the year, when homeschool families all over start to convert their curriculum entirely over to Christmas! Holiday and winter themed everything – science, math, history, geography, language arts.

I did this for a few years with Wyatt, preschool through about Kindergarten. Now though, I just weave some magic of the season into our regular curriculum, just a sprinkle, enough to make some whimsy alongside our regular learning. And, I am super excited to say that I have everything all lined up! Now printed and ready – well, we are not quite there yet!

However, I am super excited to share what we are planning!

First up:

Santa’s Tasty Trip Around the World from The Waldock Way

The Waldock Way is one of our very favorite creators to get homeschool curriculum from. We used her Traveling the States curriculum last year and it inspired a love of states and geography and state birds in Wyatt that still lasts now! And since she is having a 40% off all of her curriculum sale right now, I splurged on a special (and tasty!) Christmas geography unit study! This takes you around the world, and includes history, maps, and recipes! We won’t finish the whole thing but we can probably add a few countries in every year for a while to come. And since there is a sale, I bought the Who Was Claude Monet unit study as well, since he is the January artist of the month!

Next up, I found a few fun looking unit studies for Language Arts over on Teachers Pay Teachers.

These are all from the store Lashes and Littles, and I can’t wait to use them. I bought The Polar Express, Little Red Sleigh, Dasher, and 5 More Sleeps ‘Til Christmas, and I am sure Wyatt will love them! They are all 40-50 pages and since I plan on doing one a week I am sure we won’t do everything, again, but I will pick and choose from the many activities. These studies include comprehension, crafts, cause and effect, noun and verb work, writing prompts, coloring sheets – the list goes on and on. I am super excited about The Polar Express. Wyatt has not watched that movie yet and this year we are going to watch it. He loves trains and all things transportation so I am sure he will enjoy it, so that is going to be our big finale.

Finally, I pulled something from my archives that I bought a few years ago. Wyatt is special needs as you all know, and while he does well in school, I often meet him where he is, and math and numbers are just a struggle for him. We continue to learn at grade level but we are always always reviewing to keep those neural pathways open, and this is just perfect for some bonus fun math in December (and maybe all winter!)

This awesome looking winter math bundle is from Raising Dinos. I did buy it as part of a mega pack a few years ago and since I save everything, I was able to find it on my computer to reprint. I think it will be such a great “addition” to our math this December!! It is on sale now for $2.80, and is 79 pages, so it is a steal!

And that is it! We will continue along with our regularly scheduled curriculum and sort of gently fold this in as we go. I am super excited about it, and I hope that Wyatt will be too!

Comfy Cozy Christmas!

Good day after Thanksgiving morning everyone! I am sitting here in my pajamas, working on my second cup of coffee, doing a little online Black Friday shopping. I hope all who celebrate had a good day yesterday; I know that we did!

But now that Thanksgiving has passed, it is time to move on to Christmas!! In keeping with my last post, I am going to continue to tone down my expectations and plans – I can be a little Clark Griswold, if you know what I mean. However, I do have some ideas and fun things planned for our family!

Lisa from Boondock Ramblings and I have a linky up on our pages, that will be for all of our holiday themed posts, and we would love it if you join in! If you post about anything holiday related, drop your link in our linky, and if you want grab our image too! You will be able to find this linky anytime, I have a dedicated page for it. Just look for the Comfy Cozy Christmas tab under my header!

I am looking forward to reading about what all of you are up to this holiday season, whether you link up or not.

Have a comfy cozy day all! Watch some movies, read a book, take a walk – do what restores you today, if you are able.

Last Minute Coffee Catch Up

Good morning everyone! I have my coffee here next to me, steaming away, and I am busy thinking about what I need to get done today in prep for tomorrow, as I am sure many of you are – maybe whether it is a holiday for you or not!

First though, I want to say thank you to all of you. My online community. I live a pretty isolated life at times, with homeschooling and having a special needs child. My life looks different at times from the “norm” and this space and community mean a lot to me. When you comment, whether it is telling me to have a great week or a book you have read or happy birthday, these comments all make my day. My world is small and you all make it much much bigger so thank you so much for coming here and visiting with me. I love reading all of your stories and adventures as well! I find you all so inspirational and love seeing what you are reading or watching or planting or just plain doing.

I have been thinking a lot lately about gratitude and kindness. Having gratitude for the everyday moments, the spaces we love and inhabit, the people in our lives, those we come across even fleetingly in a day. I am trying to be more mindful, to give more grace, to be more aware of moments that I can give and be a help to someone, even if it is just a simple little thing. To think of how and where I can go into the world and do good. This week in particular, this month, I am sure it is on a lot of people’s minds. November and Thanksgiving here in the States sort of provokes this kind of thinking. We think of what we are grateful for, the kindnesses we receive, the people in our lives. Some days are tougher than others, and while I am not a fan of toxic positivity, it is good to sit a minute and think of one thing that we are thankful for, big or small.

We are going into the season of giving, the holiday season, and I think in the madness of the holidays we can lose sight of what is most important. We think we need to buy stacks of gifts, that we need to do everything, all the decorating, all the baking, do all of the cool experiences that we can with our children and families, and maybe we need reminding that we don’t need to do it all. We don’t need to make ourselves stressed and push past our limits in the name of the holidays. We don’t need to check every box on those bucket lists. We can take a beat and just enjoy, whittle down our expectations for ourselves and what we need to do. Keep things simple, slow down. Enjoy.

And that is what I want to say to you today. Make sure that in the craziness, that you take a minute to enjoy where you are and who you are with.

And let’s add another one – Be a blessing.

Watching:

I watched my first Christmas movie of the season, a Hallmark Christmas movie called Hope at Christmas. It has begun….

We also have been watching Season 2 in the Wheel of Time series, the British version of Ghosts, and Murdoch Mysteries.

And that is it here from the mitten! What are you all up to?

Saturday Morning Coffee Catch Up

Hello everyone! Since next week is a holiday week and I am hosting Thanksgiving in my teeny tiny home I am going to be super busy, and I am not sure when I will get a chance to post. But I wanted to share about Wyatt’s appointment and this week so, here we go!

First though, the more fun parts. Wyatt and I headed to Ann Arbor Wednesday afternoon. Our destination – the Natural History Museum at the University of Michigan. I thought it would be neat to see some dinosaur bones and check out some of the other exhibits there. So we had a fun little field trip!

We both loved the Exploring Michigan room the best, more than the dinosaur bones. The museum has a lot of hands on type activities for kids and is worth a trip if you are ever in the area. It is free and I would plan on an hour or two there at least, although you could stay longer if you did all of the activities, which we didn’t.

After exploring the museum, Wyatt and I headed to the hotel we were going to stay at for the night. The plan was for Billy to meet us there after work and then we would have dinner in the room and just chill before Wyatt’s super early appointment at Mott’s. But Wyatt and I got some chill out time early! After asking a few people for recommendations, we ended up staying at Weber’s Inn. When I was a kid, it was like a big deal to go and stay at Weber’s – I think for the holidome or something. Whatever it was, I know that we stayed there too. So it was neat to take Wyatt there for a night! The rooms are all newly renovated, with super comfy beds and bright bathrooms with an amazing shower. But what really set them apart was the staff. Every single person we encountered was so friendly and helpful! I was navigating check in alone with a young child in a wheelchair, luggage, and feeling frazzled and seriously, everyone was so nice. They let me check in early, they helped me with our room door when our key wouldn’t work, they just were beyond. Once we were settled, Wyatt and I stocked up on junk from the vending machines and plopped into the bed and read and played on our devices, decompressing. Billy got there around 6, minutes after the pizza arrived (Cottage Inn for the win, they were also amazingly friendly!) and we ate dinner in the room, catching up on the day’s events.

Once Wyatt went to sleep, Billy and I tuned in to the Hallmark Mysteries and Movies channel. Since the next day was my birthday, Billy told me I could choose. So I chose a Hallmark Christmas movie! My first Christmas movie has been watched, let’s check that off the list! It was apparently based on a book by Nancy Naigle, and I really enjoyed it.

The next morning we were up at 6. I was so glad we were only staying 15 minutes from the hospital, otherwise our morning would have been much earlier – and on my birthday too!

We really liked Wyatt’s new epileptologist. We didn’t dislike his old one, but I am trying to centralize all of his care and since we moved his neurosurgeon to U of M, I felt it was important to move his epileptologist as well. It is just so much easier to share imaging, information, when it is all in one system. Wyatt had information in three different hospital systems and I think this will really streamline it all.

So – the appointment. Wyatt has focal epilepsy, which he was diagnosed with in May of 2020. Since then, he has technically “failed” two medicines, which means that the medicines do not completely stop his seizures. Wyatt’s seizures are so subtle, his eyes shift slightly to the right, and maybe he will have a little arm jerk, and they last about 2-5 seconds. Without the meds they could look different, and more involved so the medicine does control them, but he does get breakthrough seizures, which puts him in the intractable category. Usually, when you fail meds, the next line of treatment discussed is surgery to remove the spot of origin if possible. But Wyatt is more complicated. Due to his brain bleeds at birth, he has other areas of damage that could spawn seizures if this one area that is causing them now is removed. He also has something called ESES, which means he has almost constant spikes during sleep. Our new doctor really gave us so much information, and laid out so many different paths that we could take, and even said that for Wyatt, for him seizure free could mean just one or two short seizures a month. Which to some people might sound not great, but for now, that is ok with us as long as he is safe. We left the appointment feeling very informed and more hopeful. So overall, it was a very good visit, and therefore happy birthday me!

We had a very low key rest of the day. Billy and Wyatt gifted me with a gift card for a massage (yes!), my mom bought me a purse, my dad and stepmom gifted me some birthday cash, and my cousin sent me flowers! It all made me smile! (and Billy is totally making me that Dolly Parton cake tomorrow)

And that is it for now! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

My Sort of Old Fashioned, Vintage-ish Gift Guide for Kids

I feel like the holidays sort of snuck up on me this year. How is Thanksgiving next week already? I am so so behind. More behind than I have been in years. Maybe you are too? I am also thinking so much about how to make the holidays more simple, with more emphasis on toys and things that last, that encourage not just play but creativity, learning, and exploration. I put together a few ideas here on this list, if you are interested! Some of these are actual items I plan on buying, some are suggestions or items that just made it to my list because they are so wholesome! They are all just in random order but I love them all, and they do vary in price, from more affordable to a bit more of a splurge.

This list does contain affiliate links.

Owl Lovey – Ok, so I know said no particular order but I did list this owl first because I personally am in love with it. I just love how soft and floofy it looks!

Deer Soft One Activity Book – This is absolutely an item on my list, for tiny Bebe. It is just so sweet and I love that it is interactive. It crinkles, it folds out, it has a mirror, it is just a super fun little thing for sweet little babies.

Nature Foraging Bag for Children – Does anyone else have very full pockets when they take their kids and grandkids or any kid outside? Rocks, leaves, acorns, chestnuts, sticks…this adorable handmade bag will give them something to fill on their to keep their treasures with them.

Four in a Row Game – A non-plastic version of the popular game we all know! I love the gentle colors and the price is right!

Knot Tying Kit – I just thought this was so cool. It says it can be played like a game, and has 48 cards and enough line for two to play. It has instructions for knots that are useful for camping, boating, fishing, etc. I can just see a little Billy playing with this as a kid.

Morse Code Light – Just another nifty item I thought would be cool. And even better would be to buy two and let your kids/their friends/cousins send messages to each other!

Wooden Castle Building Blocks – Wyatt has a huge set of blocks like this that he LOVES building and playing with. I need to get him the next two items to go with it….

Starry Night and Thoughtful Dragon – I mean every castle needs a knight – and a friendly dragon too!

Crochet Stuffie – So I always include something like this in my lists, because we got one for Wyatt when he was like 2, and he still LOVES his Henry something fierce. Wyatt has a crochet badger (Henry) and woe to us if he gets lost. This Etsy shops has tons to choose from, but I thought the deer was just so adorable.

Hearth Song Tea Set – I have looked at this tea set for so many years online. I have never bought it but it just seems so darn cute!! I can’t get over all the little whimsical woodland creatures. I would have totally dug this as a little kid. Contains a party for 4!

Ikea Flisat Dollhouse – I love the sturdy simplicity of this toy. It can be decorated to any child’s desire, and it would be fun to do as a project, or you can leave it as is. It is just perfect.

And finally, the last items on my list!

Bird Building Blocks – These are a keeper. Let them play now, then store as an heirloom, they are that gorgeous. They are all handmade here in the USA, and it says at least 12 master craftspeople inspect all six sides of every block, and in a very cool Art Nouveau style.

Forest Friends Rollers – For that hands on kid, who loves playdough, salt dough creations, and stamping. There are a few different sets available, but I chose forest friends for this guide. All of them are cute though! That little snail, be still my heart.

I hope that I was able to give you some ideas!! I am pretty sure those rollers are going to end up in someone’s stocking this year, along with that little knight at dragon. And of course as I said, I am getting tiny Bebe that adorable little book!

Books

Comfy Cozy Cinema: Fisherman’s Friends

Hello all! Lisa from Boondock Ramblings and I love to buddy watch movies together – even though I am in Michigan and she is in Pennsylvania! We don’t literally watch together in a watch party, although that might be fun one time! We wanted our fall list to feel fall cozy, move into some more chilling movies, than turn cozy again for November.

What a “note” to end on! I loved this movie the first time we watched it, and I loved it just as much this time around. I am not a boat person, despite being from the Great Lakes State, but I am drawn to stories of the sea and water nonetheless. My mother’s family were all shipbuilders, in Michigan and back in England, so maybe some of that is just in my blood. I also once had a palm reader in New Orleans tell me that I was once a ship captain who went down with his ship, so there is that fun little story as well. Anyway, I like a sea shanty and a good fisherman story, and Wyatt does as well. He watched this with us for the most part last night and really enjoyed all the singing parts.

Anyway, I am getting way off course here. Our movie feature this week was Fisherman’s Friends. Find Lisa’s post here!

This movie is based on a true story, about a group of fisherman from Cornwall who were signed by Universal Records for their folk singing abilities. Who would have thought that in this day and age that such a folksy, working class type group could achieve top ten status? But they did. I think it just shows how people do appreciate and crave community and joy and just real people doing real things. Not everything has to be manufactured and aesthetic. Although, this look is pretty aesthetic among some people. I mean who doesn’t love the idea of sitting by the sea in a thick fisherman’s sweater, enjoying some soup and a pint? My own husband asks the barber for “more sea captain, less lumberjack” when he goes to the barber for a beard trim, so apparently he is into that look himself!

Samuel Goldwyn Films summarizes this movie as:

A fast living, cynical London music executive (Daniel Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he’s pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate “fish out of water” as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he’s drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he’s forced to reevaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means.

I think a lot of the movie is yes, Danny’s transformation and growth, from a “Peter Pan” type of adult man child still trying to hold onto his youth, into one that is responsible and knows what real work looks like. Not that people who work in offices or as executives or whatever don’t do work, my own husband is an office worker and he works HARD, but for the purposes of this movie, work for Danny is all just fun and games, all about making money and making a profit and finding the next big group. When he meets the fisherman in Cornwall however, he sees what family is like, loyal men who risk their lives for their jobs and their families, a sense of community that pulls together and cares about one another. Life has its fun moments, but it is not just all a big lark.

Jim (played by James Purefoy) and his family are the central moving forces in this movie. Jim is the most salty of the crew, and he works with his father Jacob, and his mother works at the local pub, which is a beloved spot in their little port town. His daughter Alwyn (played by Tuppence Middleton, no relation to Kate because I looked it up) and her daughter Tamsin live with Jim and run a Bed and Breakfast.

The heart of this movie, borrowing from a line said by Alwyn about the town, are the people. The stories, the community, the friendships. The shared history. The singing of sea shanties is just one way that share joy and sorrow. Music conveys so much emotion for all occasions, doesn’t it? These songs also are part of their history, of all fisherman who have gone before them, some are silly, some are sad.

When I was a little girl, my parents played the Irish Rovers on our record player weekly, probably daily. My mom would pick me up and spin me around and around the floor as she danced, singing along with the songs of the Rovers. I knew the words to Drunken Sailor and The Unicorn and all of those good old songs by the time I was four, and my very earliest memories, those blurry ones that don’t seem real that happen before you are even 2 or 3, include some of these songs and moments. Songs transport you through time and space, and as Alwyn says in this movie, people want to hear Fisherman’s Friends sing their shanties not for the high notes, but to be transported to the high seas.

I can just imagine living somewhere where the waves break against the land, where the wind blows salt in your eyes and face, rocky beaches where you can have a fire and a cup of tea and maybe some stew made from what is gathered from the sea. That is where we are transported when we hear these songs; or maybe a pub, filled with laughter and camraderie.

There are so many scenes in the pub, singing and laughing and just so joyful. I already shared an early memory; here is one of my happiest. When Billy and I were younger and not yet parents, we took a trip to Shenandoah with my brother and sister-in-law, and would spend the nights in the pub at Big Meadows. And it was just like the scenes in the movie. A folk singer was on stage, leading the crowd in singing those songs we all know by heart. By the time we were ready to leave, the night was pitch black and being on the top of a mountain, we would walk out and the sky was filled with stars, and there was a slight fog creeping up, and it was just one of those perfect moments in time.

Anyway, this movie review turned into more of a post about me and my memories. I think though, that that is the type of movie this is. We think of our own friends, our own communities, and music and how it moves through us, taking us places. It moves us, and it reminds us.

This week I will leave you with a few songs. One by the actual Fisherman’s Friends, another I just love.

And stay tuned!!! Comfy Cozy Christmas is coming up on both of our blogs! We are going to post one giant linky for anyone who wants to post anything about the holidays – not just Christmas, we are inclusive of all, but we just are nerdy little alliteration lovers, so Comfy Cozy Christmas it is. It can be anything from baking to decorating to movies to just anything holiday related. So look for that coming soon! I have a special page just for this, just keep watching that space as we get closer to December! Lisa and I plan on buddy watching a movie or two, and then soloing it the rest of the month!

Wednesday Morning Coffee Catch Up

Hello everyone! It is a sunny morning, and I have a good cup of coffee by my side. I’m going to savor it because after I do, I need to get a move on! We have a busy two days ahead of us. This afternoon Wyatt and I are headed into Ann Arbor for the afternoon to hang out and check out some of the city, then we are checking into a hotel for the night, where Billy will meet us early in the evening for dinner and of course to stay overnight. Then tomorrow we have a bright and early appointment at Mott’s for Wyatt, with a new epileptologist. I am super nervous and hopeful about his appointment, so prayers and good vibes everyone!

Tomorrow is also my birthday! I don’t think we are going to do much, it will be a busy day with Wyatt but this weekend I am requesting that Billy make my new favorite thing, the Dolly Parton Banana Cake! I love Dolly, don’t you? My brother actually made us all this cake last Saturday and I am in love with it. It is freaking awesome. It is a mix but you also need to buy other things as well to go with it, like the vanilla wafers, banana pudding, etc.

Last Saturday we actually spent just bopping around visiting family, which was nice. It was nice to catch up with everyone! We saw Billy’s parents and then went to my brother’s and visited with him and his family and my mom who was over there as well.

Sunday I went to church, then came home and cleaned, so not too exciting but necessary. We are hosting Thanksgiving this year due to my brother’s surgical recovery, and this house needs to be whipped into shape! Other than that, it has been slow around here, just school and cleaning and chilling out with family. Nothing special but very nice.

And that my friends, is a very very short catch up! What has been going on in your worlds?
