Top Ten Tuesday: My Favorite Stephen King Books

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

Today’s Prompt: Freebie for Halloween

A few weeks ago I thought about doing this post, and then I saw that Olivia did it. I loved reading about her favorites, and thought I would now share mine!

I grew up reading King’s books. He was my favorite author for decades! And he always came out with a new book near my birthday which was awesome. I have quite a collection! Then when Wyatt was born, I just couldn’t read him anymore. His books began to freak me out too much. I will always have fond memories of his books and all the years that I read them though and I still have my favorites. There are even a few I will still read that are on this list.

Here we go – in no particular order.

Joyland || Bag of Bones || 11/22/63

Ok, I said no particular order but these are my three favorites. LOL. I love a ghost story, and Joyland and Bag of Bones are ghost stories, while 11/22/63 just evolves into a love story that made me cry.

Joyland was a fun ride – silly dad joke intended. There is mystery and coming of age and a ghost, and I love it. One thing that is weird about this one for me is that there are two characters, Erin and Devin, and it is weird to read because it is my name, and my brother’s. Lol.

Bag of Bones is another ghost story but it is enveloped in a story of love and grief and loss. I have read this one many times and it never fails to capture me every time.

11/22/63 is obviously about Kennedy but also so much more. It is a crazy journey, but also has its sentimental moments.

Different Seasons || The Dark Tower The Gunslinger || Skeleton Crew

Different Seasons and Skeleton Crew both contain the scariest of King’s stories in my opinion- The Raft, The Mist, and Apt Pupil. These three have freaked me out since I read them back in middle school. I absolutely can’t swim in open water without thinking about The Raft, and Apt Pupil was such a horrifying slide into evil it still scares me to think about. I think because it is not paranormal, just straight up the evils of humanity. The Mist is just one of those stories that scare you as well; you can’t see what is coming and then it is too late when you do.

The Dark Tower books are amazing! That is all I will say there.

The Shining || Needful Things || Misery

The Shining. Of course I am going to love a book about a haunted hotel! And I love that King stayed at the real Overlook in Colorado, which is The Stanley Hotel. I will watch and listen to documentaries and videos and listen to podcasts about that place any day of the week. My dad visited there once when he was in Colorado for work and I have always been jealous! Anyway, this story is master class King.

Needful Things is creepy in a different way. I loved that this was at its heart, at least in my opinion, about the excesses of materialism and society, but it was also just a fun book too amid the crazy. These people were wild!

Misery. Now this lady was just crazy. Never tell an author you are their number one fan. Lol.

Oh. My. Gosh. did I love this book. It is super gross at times and freaky, but that was why I liked it, the absolute scary of it. King also wrote The Regulators, which is the same story set somewhere else, with the characters all switched up, as mirror novels. Desperation published under his name Stephen King, the other under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman. It was just such a cool concept and I loved them both, but of the two, I enjoyed this one more.

I have to take my son somewhere today that is a long drive and I will be gone all day, but I hope to visit everyone tomorrow!

  1. King was a favorite of my sister’s authors. I loved 11/22/63 and if you haven’t watched yet, I recommend the mini series starring Jams Franco. It followed the books fairly well and I loved the actress who played Sadie.

Another of his I loved was Billy Summers. I sure hope they do a mini series on that book. The Mr. Mercedes books are also good. Great post!
