Sweater Weather Cinema: What is a Fall Movie?

Hello everyone!

So yesterday I posted about loving to watch fall movies in the fall, and a few people commented that they weren’t quite sure what a fall movie was. And I get it, not everyone views movies and books through a seasonal lens like I do. I tend to romanticize life in our different ways, around the seasons and events. And fall is my favorite so I go all out. I do all the fall things, like cider mills and decorating and all that, but also, watch movies and tv that evoke those autumnal feelings for me.

For me, that means movies with fall foliage, or a movie I can snuggle up with a cat to. Cozy and nostalgic, mysterious, then closer to Halloween, spooky and creepy. Alfred Hitchcock, or Meg Ryan movies. Cozy sweater movies, where the mood is maybe coffee involved, apples, football. Harvest and pumpkins. Small towns, big cities, it doesn’t matter, it’s about the cozy, the creepy, the feelings.

I am going to share some of the movies and shows that I would consider fall , and then I will share some videos from creators and a few other lists from around the webs, just in case you need some fall inspiration! And I am sure some of my ideas will overlap with the lists of others.

This one will hit differently this year, but Clue is one of my all time favorite movies to watch in the fall. A rainy, stormy night, murder, a big old house? Yes.

And following that line of thinking…

And this is going to take too long this way. I have too many movies to list one at a time.

These are just a few of the movies I would consider fall.

These YouTubers are fantastic at getting the vibes going!

And then here are a few links to other lists!

I hope this gives you all a bit of fall movie inspiration, or has added a few fun fall movies to your watchlist! Just make sure to grab snacks and cozy blankets as well!

And if you do find one or two to watch this season, feel free to link your post here!

  1. Glad to be a post inspiration 😂
Of course, I get fall feelings (a huge part of which is rain for me), after all fall is my favorite season. It just doesn’t translate to many specific fall movies for me. I’ll happily watch Clue for the umpteenth time, though! 😀

    1. Clue is one of my all time favorites! I love it. Lol. Rainy movies feel fall to me. I am apparently very seasonally motivated. Or something like that.

Marsha said the same thing as you. Lol. So I thought maybe I would post about what makes a movie feel like fall to me. I just really like a theme!!

Yes, I love all of these! I should rewatch Knives Out, Fantastic Mr Fox, Clue, and Arsenic and Old Lace soon. 😄

  3. Girl, Gilmore Girls is an absolute fall must. My niece just turned 13 and now she has fallen in love with Gilmore Girls. It’s a show that stands the test of time. You’re blog is so beautiful. I look forward to reading more from you in the future.

  4. My fall movies include Father of the Bride, Baby Boom, Fly Away Home, Sweet November, Autumn in New York, Good Will Hunting, Stepmom, and Remember the Titans… just to name a few.

  5. I love making hot apple cider in the fall and hopefully I’ll make some again this year! I do love to embrace Autumn as well with movies and tv shows! I’d love to rewatch Clue as an homage to Tim Curry and I usually watch Rocky Horror around Halloween as well! 🖤 I love all the Knives Out movies, they’re so good!! & I’m also a massive Over The Garden Wall fan! Your list of movies is so good I added a few to my list to watch! I LOVE Darling Desi’s videos for seasonal lists and inspo as well 🥰

  6. I actually love most of these movies! I get the idea now from your first bit…movies we want to cuddle up with someone or something and just enjoy the vibe! I hope they make another Knives Out movie, and I can’t wait for the new Practical Magic movie! I’m going to take myself on a date to see it!
