Thursday Morning Coffee Catch Up

Hello everyone!! Last week when I wrote this post I didn’t have any coffee – only instant packs that Billy had taken camping! Now thankfully we have a full pot brewing in the kitchen, and I have a steaming cup next to me.

It’s been hot and muggy out there this week. Disgustingly humid. Wyatt and I have been hanging out at home most of the time, but we have ventured out a few times.

Saturday we hung out with my brother and his family for a small fire, which was nice. It was before the really gross weather moved in and it was a nice preview of fall and fires. I can’t wait. The kiddos were all just doing their thing, and my littlest niece Wild Child was having fun playing with the portable fan I had bought Wyatt. (Thanks for the suggestion Captain, we take it everywhere!) It was just a nice relaxing evening, hanging out.

Sunday we spent in our shady spot at the park, under the trees. Wyatt absolutely loves this so we try to do it whenever we can. On the way there though we passed a local rotary club having a little to-do at the fire station. They had demonstrations shooting off the fire hose, and also had some free ice cream from the Good Humor woman. We spent a nice time at the park afterwards, full of ice cream, just drawing, enjoying the breeze under the trees, the singing of birds, and reading. (me lol)

Later that evening, we had game night, which is Wyatt’s favorite. This time we played a game we had checked out from the library called What’s Next. It was really fun! It is sort of a choose your own adventure/rpg type game. There are three stories you can choose from, and each card has either an event or a choice you need to make or do. There are little side challenges as well, and a tower of peril! It really was a lot of fun, and we are definitely adding it to the wish list!

The rest of the week we have been home, with one journey to the library to check out more books, and to collect Wyatt’s summer reading National Parks Card and cryptid card that he earned. Next week he gets to shop the library “shop” with the book bucks he earned with all the reading we have been doing.

I have been working on getting our school plans together for next year. I absolutely love doing it honestly, putting together the plans and then finding fun tie-ins. Fall looks like it is going to be a lot of fun, with reading adventures like Alice in Wonderland and The Phantom Tollbooth, Indigenous history of Michigan, dinosaurs, and artists like Charley Harper! I am just starting to construct my Charley Harper art study for Wyatt, and I am having to taper things down because there is just so much we can do – too many ideas and not enough time. I think Harper will be a really fun artist to start off the year!

And just some randoms from the camera roll!

Have a great week everyone, and stay safe!

  1. This sounds like such a good way to spend a summer week! (It’s been super gross here in N Carolina too, ugh. I need fall. Need!)

The former librarian in me is so intrigued by the sound of y’all’s summer reading program! National Parks? Cryptids? Book bucks? Love it! 😀

Here’s to cozy quiet weeks and more moderate temperatures! ❤

    1. Ughhh I am sure!! I am so ready for fall here too!!! 100%!!

Summer reading was so fun this year. Every week was a new National Park destination. The kids could do “missions” to learn about each one, and when they finished they unlocked the “cryptid” for each park. The reward for each was like a card about the national park with really cool illustrations, and then also cryptid playing cards to collect. They also could do missions online and earn badges, and log the minutes they spent reading. Once they reached 100, they would receive a book buck to spend in the store, up to $6.00. That store opens next week. They also had a huge kick off party with themed snacks, games, temporary tattoos – it was really cool.

  2. Ahoy there! I be so glad that the fan is working! Loved all of the photos in this installment. Favorites include Wyatt by the ice cream truck and your kitten. Oh and The Blue Castle is such a wonderful book (minus the last paragraph).

Even with only one son left homeschooling high school I STILL have a tendency to pull out far too much for us to cover in one year. There is just so much fun stuff out there I want to learn about and teach about and expose us all to! It sounds like a really lovely week. Our weather has been very wet and rainy and muggy so we’ve spent lots of time inside this week too. BUT I managed to get all caught up on my scrapbooking so I am super excited about that.

You always manage to find fun things to do when the weather is bad. Free ice cream…sign me up!! Library book clubs in the summer were always so much fun for my kids and the one summer my oldest granddaughter lived with us. I love how you are excited about what you’re going to teach! A new school year was always so exciting and wonderful for me, too!

    1. Thanks Marsha! I try my best! And yeah free ice cream was an awesome surprise! The reading program has been fun. It had so many different layers that people could either do a lot or a little depending and still participate. Since we were inside a lot, we did a lot more with it.

I can’t wait to get started on this school year! Lol. Wyatt had been on medicine that was really hampering him in all ways for so long, even academically, he was just so tired all the time, and now he is on meds that he is thriving on (minus the occasional nausea). I am excited to see how he does this year.

  5. I love The Blue Castle. It’s such a main character becomes who she is really supposed to be kind of story. I want to reread it soon. The fire department thing sounds so fun and anything with ice cream is always a good time! I love the sound of What’s Next. We’ve been playing more board games lately because it’s so stupid hot and that sounds like a fun one.

    1. I am about halfway through and I love it. I can see why so many people tell me it is their favorite Montgomery book!

And heck yeah to ice cream!

The What’s Next game was really fun, and there are so many different outcomes for each story that I really feel there is some longevity that makes it worth buying. Ugh here too – but probably not as hot as where you are! We have been inside a lot as well though.
