So I tried a new thing last week – listening to an audiobook instead of reading. I thought it would be ok, since I listen to podcasts but for some reason, I just can’t do it. I am not sure what my problem is but I wish I could pay attention to an audiobook. My week last week was all about administrative things for our house – making lists and checking stuff off. We also celebrated Billy’s birthday, Billy bought a new to us car (a 2017 Subaru Outback that he is in love with), and Billy took a vacation day Friday and we all went to an orchard and picked peaches. It was a lot of fun. Wyatt and I also got our first haircuts since February! His auntie Kellie gave us outside and masked up cuts – we both really needed them!

Read Last Week:

Can you believe, nothing? My reading is so weird this year. I did try to listen to my cherry season book, but no dice.

Reading This Week:

I have been successful with nonfiction this summer, and The Read-Aloud Family looks pretty perfect for us. And Mary Stewart is a go-to comfort read author for me – and might be what I need after reading Mexican Gothic, which was so good!

Posted Last Week:

Not much, but I did participate in the blog linky Currently…August.

Watching:

The Umbrella Academy, Father Brown…and I think that is it.

Stay safe everyone.

  1. Hooray for those haircuts! We can’t even have visitors, or my daughter could do mine outside here. But no, if I did that, they would put me in total isolation afterwards. I know, I understand the necessity for those restrictions here…but I haven’t seen a single person that doesn’t live or work here since March 11! Unless you count video chats. I am grateful for those.

I have the same problem with audiobooks. I just can’t do it! I think I need to see the words, since I am a visual learner. I have listened to audiobooks on long road trips, but only books I am not going to review. LOL.

Enjoy your week and those new hairstyles! Stay safe.

    1. It was so nice – my hair was halfway down my back, and Wyatt was looking like a bad news bear. Lol. He is much more comfortable now too.

I think about you in your isolation a lot actually! I am glad that you are able to video chat with your friends and family. It is not the same but it is something and we have to hold on to the little moments that get us through.

I am a visual learner too – that must have something to do with it. I just can’t focus!

  2. I am not a huge fan of audiobooks, in general, but I seem to be able to do nonfiction over fiction and the occasional classic read. We have Hoopla at my library, so I try to download an audiobook or two to listen to just before bed. That way I fall asleep listening to a book, just like I did when I was little.

I hope the switch to a nonfiction book works better for you. Mary Stewart was one of the first grownup books I remember that my mom allowed me to read. I’ve always wanted to reread her and see if I still enjoyed her stories.

My sister-in-law came to our front porch and cut our hair a month or so ago, masked, of course. My husband needs another cut, but, gosh, it’s hot. I hate to ask her to do that in the heat.

I hope you have a good week.

    1. I am so glad to see that I am not the only one who struggles with audiobooks! And that could be – maybe it is the difference between nonfiction and fiction, since the podcasts I listen to are true story stuff. I used Hoopla for this one too! I love that you fell asleep listening to books when you were little. I listened to a lot of book and tape things too.

I found Mary Stewart on the shelves of the library one summer and just fell in love! I love them, although they are a bit old fashioned in some of the attitudes, but that is ok. I enjoy the stories. 🙂

I am glad we got our cuts in on Saturday! This week is supposed to be crazy hot (for Michigan lol)

Thanks Deb, I hope you do as well!

I can’t do audio books either. I read fast and they read too slow for me, maybe that is why you don’t like them either. Glad you got haircuts-the photo of Wyatt is adorable.

    1. Hmm that could be definitely be a reason! The pacing does seem a little slow to me.

And thank you!! It was a good time to practice mask wearing too, in an outside environment like that. I haven’t taken him in anywhere since March but if this becomes our new normal for longer than any of us want, he will have to get used to it. 😦

  4. Yay for haircuts! Haha it’s hard to go that long- I get antsy when my hair gets too long lol. And I’m the same way with audiobooks- I just have trouble staying with them attention- wise. I get distracted… congrats on the Outback too! Those are nice.

I need to start The Umbrella Academy.

    1. Wyatt’s hair was crazy long lol. We were saying he looked super 70s lol.

I am glad to read here that I am not the only one who has a problem listening to audiobooks!

You will love the Umbrella Academy!

And thanks! It’s a nice fit for our family!

I’m glad you were able to get a haircut. I finally got mine cut and thinned out a TON about a week ago, and it was amazing. It had been way too long.

I can’t listen to audiobooks either! I’m not a big podcast listener, but I do want to listen more, and I can definitely focus more on those than audiobooks. Not really sure why either. LOL

I was just noticing that it is almost 6 months since my last haircut. One of these days – maybe. I recently traded in my 2017 Outback for a 2020 Crosstrek. I found the Outback too big for my needs and hope you enjoy yours. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    1. Lol wouldn’t it be funny if this one were yours? Lol. My husband wanted a pick up truck but I suggested that maybe he find a vehicle that would work for both his needs of carting building supplies (he is a hobby woodworker) but also work for our family needs. It seems like a great fit so far! I can see how it could be too big though. Wyatt comes with a lot of gear with his CP so we need extra space for that as well. 🙂 We have heard such great things about Subaru!!

  7. I’m going to be cutting my own hair before too long! Getting an appointment is pretty difficult at the moment. 😦

It took me years of on and off trying to get used to audiobooks. In the end, I started listening to them in the car while commuting to work and it worked perfectly… It required focus at first but then became second nature, no different to my brain than listening to the radio or chatting to a passenger. After that, I was able to cook, clean etc while listening. I still can’t listen to an audiobook while doing anything that requires a lot of brainpower but maybe someday. 🙂 I’d recommend sticking with them as they are a game-changer when you can make them work for you.

  8. I am the opposite: can listen to an audio book but struggle with podcasts. Hope you will try again because audio books can be so enjoyable. I listen best in the car but today, took my ‘book’ for a run. The Umbrella Academy sounds interesting. Pinned it so I can remember to check it out. Yay for a new to you car.
