Book Review and Giveaway: The Best of Us by Robyn Carr

Goodreads Summary:

Dr. Leigh Culver loves practicing medicine in Timberlake, Colorado. It is a much-needed change of pace from her stressful life in Chicago. The only drawback is she misses her aunt Helen, the woman who raised her. But it’s time that Leigh has her independence, and she hopes the beauty of the Colorado wilderness will entice her aunt to visit often.

Helen Culver is an independent woman who lovingly raised her sister’s orphaned child. Now, with Leigh grown, it’s time for her to live life for herself. The retired teacher has become a successful mystery writer who loves to travel and intends to never experience winter again.

When Helen visits Leigh, she is surprised to find her niece still needs her, especially when it comes to sorting out her love life. But the biggest surprise comes when Leigh takes Helen out to Sullivan’s Crossing and Helen finds herself falling for the place and one special person. Helen and Leigh will each have to decide if they can open themselves up to love neither expected to find and seize the opportunity to live their best lives.

My Thoughts:

I always love when my reading takes me to the world of Sullivan’s Crossing, in Timberlake, Colorado. There is just something so real about these characters, and I have enjoyed reading about their challenges and triumphs in the previous novels. This installment was no different, I finished it in one day, a record for me these days!

Leigh Culver has settled into the community of Timberlake comfortably, healing their hurts in her clinic, sharing stories and hellos in the pubs and restaurants, slowly making friends and inroads into this friendly community. Her life seems to be just how she wants it, with the exception of missing her beloved aunt, who raised her. When a white-faced Rob Shandon, owner of the town pub, comes in one evening with his injured son, little does she know that her world is about to change in a big way. After stitching up Rob’s son’s hand, she finds she has a new patient, Rob himself, who almost faints at the sight of the blood. Leigh capably calms him down by massaging his head, something she does for patients who need some help slowing down, and boom – fireworks for Rob, immediately. Their quick friendship turns into a relationship even quicker. Spring has definitely sprung in Colorado, and love is in the air for everyone.

With spring in full bloom, Leigh’s aunt Helen comes for a visit. Helen is a popular mystery writer, and spends her time visiting different friends spread out through the U.S., avoiding midwestern winters like the plague. Helen is planning on spending much of her time with Leigh, but finds herself drawn to the front porch and kitchen table and eventually bedroom, of someone special herself.

But like Shakespeare said, the course of true love never did run smooth, as many of the couples in this book go through their share of hurdles. From Finn’s story with his girlfriend Maia, to Leigh and Rob, to Helen and her new love, all must find their way and their path to that true happiness.

I loved Leigh’s story with Rob, although, I do have to say I have to give it to Rob in this book. Leigh was a little difficult at times, and a little selfish, and I felt Rob’s character remained strong and steadfast and loyal, qualities that are also reflected in his son Finn. I loved the Shandon family, I have to say, in this book.

All in all, this was a great read from start to finish, and one to shake off those winter blues!

A New Year, New Possibilities

I’m never one for New Years Eve. I sort of dread it, to be honest. I get a little moody and melancholy and am content to have quiet little gatherings with my loved ones. Which is good, since that is what we have been doing for the last three years, since Wyatt has joined our family.

This year we had an early dinner with my brother, his wife, and my little niece. We went out for pizza and beer, had some nice conversation while our kids miraculously entertained themselves and ate their french fries (yeah fries at a pizza place, crazy kids). Then we all went home to our own homes, three blocks away from each other, and watched movies. We watched Jurassic World, while they watched Godzilla. Incidentally, Jurassic Park was the very first movie Billy and I ever watched together, and we are still huge fans of the franchise. I love dinosaurs! Then, we watched some television and when we started hearing fireworks in the neighborhood, realized it was a brand new year. For me, not a bad way to celebrate.

Every year, I pick some resolutions. This year, I guess I am still doing that, but I want them to be more lifestyle changes. To do more, and buy less. To spend more time outside. To be on my phone less, to bake bread more, eat more foods that are soulful and hearty and fresh. Slow down, stargaze, play in the snow (if we ever get any!) I’m still trying to stay away from plastic as much as I can, although I do make exceptions for my three year old, who will be four before I know it! I want to make the days count, and not just be whittled away by chores and errands – although, that stuff needs to be done or else we will have nothing to eat and live in a mess. But I don’t want it to be the focus. And I am sure there will be days that I spend entirely on the phone making appointments, or running here and there and everywhere, like this week has been full of. But I hope to build a framework this month, one that makes it easier for us to enjoy life more. To look at things with the wonder of a child again. To plant a garden full of flowers and good things to eat, to sit in the sun. To learn new things.

We started a project too, that should help my son. He gets his walker pretty soon, and we are so excited! He is on his way! We however, have a small little home. Cozy and warm and snug, but small. So the other day, I had a thought. A crazy thought, it seemed at the time, but we rolled with it for Wyatt’s sake. I decided to flip our rooms, and turned our dining room into our new living room (den, we call it), and our living room, which was bigger, into a “family room” that holds our dining room table and all his play stuff. We had to buy some new furniture, as our couches would not squish into the newly christened den. So now we have two little blue loveseats, one set right into our bay window. There is now so much space for our kiddo to explore with his walker, and it is easier for him to move around. It was a quick decision, but it was a great one. It feels so much more functional, and we love it. I still need to get some new plants and replace some things to make it work a little better, but for the most part, it is done and feels just right in here now.

This a new year, full of new possibilities. Sometimes we have to stop and take notice. Sometimes we need to be unafraid to make changes.
And if it feels right, drink champagne and dance on the table…

How about you? Any new plans for the new year?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

Hi everyone! Happy Monday! I took a bit of an unplanned social media break over the holidays – the boyo was home, and it was pretty much madness around here. We got involved in some home projects that took up a lot of our time, Wyatt was sick (again!), but it seems like we are getting back on track finally. I have so much catching up to do now, in every other area of my life!! Lol.

Reading This Week:

I am almost done! I haven’t had too much time to read, but this time around I am really enjoying this book and character. Third time’s a charm!

When I finish Anne, I have a few review books I need to get to ASAP, starting with The Best of Us by Robyn Carr. I hope to finish and review it in the next few days.

Watching:

We have been watching A Series of Unfortunate Events, Agatha Raisin, and Watership Down. Watership Down is my all time favorite book. I read it once a year, I love it to pieces. However, I am not super keen on this new animated show on Netflix. It’s hard when you know a story backwards and forwards and then it is changed for the screen. I think if I wasn’t a super fan I would like it more. 🙂

How about all of you? What’s going on in your world?

Hey everyone! I hope you are all having a great end of December~ post holiday everything. I have been having a rough time to find time to blog, with kiddo being home on break and all the merrymaking that has been happening. We have been having such a great time, spending time with family and also taking some down time to just chill with each other. I had book club last week, which was fun as always to see my friends and touch base about what has been going on in their lives. Today we got together with my entire family, cousins and their kids, and just played and ate and laughed all day. It was just kids and toys everywhere honestly, and it was so fun. Tomorrow for New Years we are planning a pretty slow night – dinner with my brother and his family, maybe a drink, then home to our house for a quiet night in. New Years Day we are hoping to go out for breakfast then take a walk in the woods, depending on the weather.

What I’ve Been Reading:

Over Christmas I reread Farmer Boy – something about Christmas makes me think of Little House. And I also read Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery – it was a treat to check back in with these characters!

Reading This Week:

I’m trying to hurry and finish A Court of Frost and Starlight before the year changes – we shall see how I do! And here I am, back at Anne of Green Gables. I have tried to read this twice and failed. Then I watched the tv show and loved it, and felt terrible I never read it. My husband gave me this beautiful copy for Christmas, knowing that I feel it is unfinished business – therefore, Anne of Green Gables is going to be my first read of 2019!

Not much! I did manage to finish my list of favorite books of 2018 though.

Watching:

We are busily watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which I fought against because I knew I wouldn’t like the stand up part too much, but visually, I knew I had to watch it. And it is a gorgeous show. We are also watching Top Chef, Agatha Raisin, Midnight Texas, and Riverdale. We are going to start The Ranch soon too.

What about all of you? What is going on? How are your holidays, if you celebrate? What book are you starting the year with?

It’s December, and everything is crazy. Wrapping, shopping, planning, baking, going, doing, plus the stuff of everyday life too, jobs and school and laundry and doctors appointments. It’s been mad. We had a great family get-together on Saturday, and it was nice just hanging out and laughing and telling stories. And of course, eating. We had some downtime all day that day though, so we were ready to go out for a bit. We made some easy cookies, ran a few quick errands, and watched The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix. We loved it!! I loved Kurt Russell as Santa, and I really loved that movie. Definitely one to include in our yearly round up from now on.

This week my to-do list is a bit smaller, with some projects to finish up around the house. I want to make a dried orange garland for our tree, some of those orange clove pomanders, and finish a few things for our Yule celebration on Friday.

This collection of four short stories was perfect for my hectic week! I plan on posting my review Tuesday!

A Flight to the North Pole

A Flight to the North Pole

Last Friday, Wyatt was given an opportunity to “fly to the North Pole.” It was definitely an amazing experience, one that we will never forget.

All week I had been telling him about how we were going to fly to the north pole and see Santa, so he was pretty excited when we arrived. And just like any other flight, we had to check in for our boarding pass. I loved that even the monitors said that we were checking in for the North Pole! And Wyatt looks cute and tiny sitting there waiting for his ticket. Lol.

There was an orchestra playing, decorations everywhere, and Wyatt was grinning from ear to ear as we moved to the next phase of our day. We had to check in with the event, where they gave him a sweatshirt, and a name tag, which reminded me of Paddington Bear, that hung around his neck. There was more music being played here, with people in costumes greeting the kids and entertaining everyone until we moved to the security line. We did have to go through security, as we were getting on a real plane and would be in the terminal. This was the only part that gave me some anxiety – because Wyatt was in a wheelchair they moved him to the other side of the gate – without me! I was very nervous about my kiddo being left there without me, and I asked the TSA agent to please make sure he didn’t wheel away. Wyatt didn’t take off but he did try, that little monkey!

Once we were through and I could breathe again, we were zoomed off by an elf to the terminal to wait for our plane. This area had clowns handing out balloons and playing games, and the flight crew was on hand to greet all the children. This, I think, was Wyatt’s favorite. He was in awe of the pilot and co-pilot. They gave him some little wings, which was pretty cool too. Finally, our plane arrived taxied up and we were ready to board our flight!

It is all very choreographed and efficient, so things are kept moving, partly because small children are not usually super patient. So I didn’t get as many photos as I wanted, but I did capture a few moments. Wyatt was also obsessed with the seat belt. I ended up keeping him on my lap, seat belted in. And then, we “took off”! The plane in reality taxied around for about an hour, and even gathered some serious speed to mimic take off. We had to leave the window shades down though, to maintain the illusion for the kids- which was a battle between me and my son, who kept wanting to open it. Lol. On our flight we were served lunch, and the elves sang carols. It was a great time, and Wyatt loved the music, and the actual plane itself. Once we landed, we were whisked away through the North Pole’s airport to “Santa’s castle”, or the hotel. Everything was decked out in Christmas decorations, cookies and candy and most importantly, coffee, lined the tables for us to snack on. Here they also had a show for the kids, of characters dressed up like superheroes who put on a mock battle, and Anna and Elsa were there singing all their songs. The kids were called up one by one to see the big man himself, and then – we went home! But not before we were given, literally, a sack of presents for the kiddo.

The generosity of the donors and volunteers that put this day on was immeasurable. The time, the planning, the gifts, the people from the hotel to the Silverliners who organized it, to Delta Airlines who flew the plane – it was an absolutely perfect, amazing, one of a kind day.

Here is a link to a local news story about it! See if you can spot us!

Last week, Wyatt had an amazing opportunity to “fly to the North Pole”. This was a special event hosted by several groups, and it was such an amazing experience for him. I plan on telling you guys all about it this week! In short, we boarded a plane and flew to the “North Pole” to meet Santa – and were back in just a few hours! Really it was more of a board an airplane, keep up an illusion of flying to the North Pole, and pretend the airport hotel was Santa’s house kind of a deal, but the kids were all like my son’s age, and they went along with it. Then Sunday we had an entirely different version of Santa and Christmas, when we visited Santa at our local metropark. It was a lovely start to our morning, quiet and simple fun and full of nature, our favorite. If you follow me on Instagram, I have a few pics up!

Hello, December!

Our Must Watch Holiday Favorites

My Grandma’s Coconut Tarts

Hello,December!

This year flew by! I can’t believe we are already in December. It’s not looking too much like winter yet around here, but it is slowly but surely getting there. Although, yesterday was 50 degrees, so crazy for Michigan in December.

I am getting all ready for the winter holiday season! For me, that means decorating the house for Christmas, including putting up our Christmas tree, making cookies, buying presents, and reading and watching holiday themed movies. I love to go all in. I am trying not to overdo it this year, but I do have a three year old, so some overdoing will be done. I love to see the surprise and excitement on his face, and it makes it all worth it. Our family decided to only buy for the littles a few years ago, and so that cuts down on my shopping and wrapping. Billy and I buy a few things for each other, and of course, I do remember the grandparents whether they want gifts or not. Wyatt has a team of people that are so involved in his life, his teachers and therapists, and this year I bought them the cutest handmade ceramic acorns. I am in love with them. I plan to give the acorns to them with a note of  thanks for helping our little acorn to grow big and strong.

This year too, I want to make sure that we give back to our community, even if we just manage something small. I think it is an important tradition to start with Wyatt, to be charitable and compassionate to others who might be struggling. So we are going to find a small act of service that we will do as a family. For Thanksgiving, we filled a local Blessings Box with food together, so maybe for Christmas we will do something similar.

We are also celebrating Yule or Winter Solstice this year, to acknowledge our awesome planet and the nature and creatures who share our world with us. I think we are going to create a wild Christmas tree, with edible ornaments for our local birds and squirrels (and occasional possum). I am still working on this idea a bit, so if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them!

And of course, we will be watching all of our favorite holiday movies, all snuggled up under our blankets as the temperatures begin to fall. Drinking hot chocolate, eating cookies and popcorn. Visiting Santa. Doing all the traditional Christmas things. I have a few picture books about Christmas traditions around the world and about Hanukkah that I plan to share with Wyatt as well. And, I will be reading my own wintery books. Like I said, I am all in.

What do you do for the holidays? Any special traditions?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

Last week was a big week of chores. Lol. Don’t we all have those weeks where it is like you have a million different family business or work related tasks to take care of? That was my week, just TCB. Thursday was supposed to be book club night, but our hostess Mary got sick and had to cancel so a few of us went out for drinks instead. Then Friday night we had an impromptu get-together with my little brother and his family, where we got a few pizzas, and then took the kids out to the backyard where we tried to call screech owls. It was pretty funny, my niece L. was racing around asking where is the owl , while Wyatt was doing his best imitations of the screech owl call. Neither of them, at three years old, were very good at the being quiet and listening part yet. It was a really good moment, although a bit chilly one.
