Today’s Prompt: Books That Live in My Head Rent Free
Hello everyone!! So I am interpreting this prompt as books that live rent free in my head because they caused some stress or worry. Isn’t that what living rent free is, something you are anxious about? Or stressing over? I am Gen-X, sometimes these phrases need to be explained to me. Anyway, these are books that I enjoyed but also found parts of them to be upsetting and disturbing, or really made think about them.
I didn’t however get to ten.
Mexican Gothic is such a fantastic book. I had never read anything really like it before, and it was my first introduction to Moreno-Garcia. I had a hard time deciding between this book and The Bewitching, because I love them both.
The God of the Woods is another one I think about still, or will pop into my head. The atmosphere of this book, the multiple viewpoints, the ending that made me so mad that I made a video about it. Lol.
Chlorine. Dang. This tiny little book blew my mind and I think about it a lot.
Gillian Flynn’s mind is a scary place and this, to me, was the scariest of her stories. However, it also taught me about the plight of dairy farmers in America, and how so many of them commit suicide and how hard their life is. This was not the point of this book really at all, but it was something I learned from it and have never forgotten.
The Mourning Hours. I went through a phase of reading all of Paula Treick DeBoard’s books. I loved them. This however is the one I remember the most. I think because it shocked me so much.
My Sister, the Serial Killer is another book that I think about. It just was so different from other books I have read!
Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk. I think this author is one where most of his books stick with you for a long time, if not forever.
And finally Stephen King. I could probably list all of his books here, honestly, that I have read. Desperation is a big one that I think about though, especially on road trips. It is so good but gross and scary. My brother and I read it at the same time and we like to occasionally lapse into high speech with thankee sai’s and can-taks just to be funny with each other. And because we are super nerds. So that is another reason it has stuck with me, King’s invented language that spans a number of books. And now I feel like I need to re-read the Dark Tower series.
Anyway, that is it from me today! I am excited to see all of these books that you have in your heads!

Right there with you, I see this phrase all the time and I still don’t know what it means! I like your interpretation, and I see a few books on your list i need to read, especially God of the Woods and Chlorine.
Lol! I am so glad I am not the only one! Chlorine was amazing. I literally think about it all the time.
I thought “living in my head, rent-free” sounded like books I’ve memorized because I’ve read them so many times. lol
Lol! It seemed a bunch of us struggled with the meaning. At least we are all in good company.
I interpreted the topic in a more positive way, but you’re so right that it can also be because the book was a bit disturbing!

Definitely a lot of Stephen King books and stories stayed in my head. That one I don’t remember as well. I think I might have only read it once, where his earlier stuff when I first got into his books in high school, I probably read numerous times.
I love Stephen King although I haven’t read him in 10 years. After I had my son I got too freaked out by him. Lol.
OK — where’s Watership Down! I thought sure that would be at the top of the list!

You’re right, living rent-free in your head has a negative connotation. Although I gave myself some latitude to use happy books too. I should have thought -about it harder because now that I’ve been reading others’ posts, I’ve been reminded of books I should have added.

My Sister the Serial Killer is a good one! It definitely stayed with me too. Also, uh oh, did the end of The God in the Woods make you good mad or bad mad? Haha that’s still on my TBR and I’m now already wondering how the ending is going to make me feel 😂

I’ve read The God of the Woods and I’m so curious about your thoughts and your video! I’ll be heading over to check that out after this. I’m also doing a Stephen King challenge and trying to read his books, and I agree, so many of his books are definitely the kind that sticks with you. I haven’t gotten to Desperation yet but I’m looking forward to it!

God of the Woods just really made me upset! Lol.
He has a way of making his characters so believable and real. His heroes are flawed but still have integrity. I think that is why they are so memorable. At least in my opinion.
I didn’t know how to interrupt it either…but I made a list as well, and only 8 books! Have a good week!

Gillian Flynn… her books are daaaaark and definitely messed with my brain. lol
I agree with all of the ones I’ve also read. I really wonder about Gillian Flynn…I like the way you phrased it. Something has to be living under a little (or big) rock in her brain to produce the books she does. They’re just so innocently sinister, if you know what I mean. I loved Mexican Gothic even though it gave me big time creeps. And, you know how I felt about Chlorine! I kept waiting for My Sister the Serial Killer to lighten up…like the title almost made it feel like it was a send up for a funny book, but it surely was not!
