Today’s Prompt: Books Outside of My Comfort Zone
Hello everyone! Today I want to write about books I want to read outside my comfort zone. I actually had a goal to read some different authors and books next year, so my list of goal books are the books (plus a few more) that I will be including today. I don’t know if I will have ten, but I am excited about this goal! I like to push my boundaries sometimes as I think it is really good for our brains to be exposed to different type materials and different things.
First up, Terry Prachett. I have been toying around with wanting to read the Discworld series and next year I am going to start. I am not a binge series reader, so it will probably take a million years for me to read them all, if I even ever do. These are the ones I am planning on starting with. Let me know your thoughts about my choices!

I am hoping to read Hogfather in December, and The Wee Free Men in January. I feel like these are not too far from what I normally read, since I do like fantasy, but I honestly don’t read much comedy.
Next, science fiction and Becky Chambers and her Wayfarer series. Or at least the first book. I don’t mind fantasy but I am not usually a fan of science fiction or anything that takes place in space. And has spaceships. So, this will be interesting!

And following that, I promised Billy that I would read Dungeon Crawler Carl. Not usually my type of book at all, but I will read it for him. He has read so many of mine that I owe him. He is fairly confident that I will love Princess Doughnut. (Donut?)

Dungeon Crawler Carl
This next one is one that I have had on my TBR for a bit but I keep putting it off because the whole novel in verse is intimidating. However I do think it is sounds absolutely fascinating and like it would be a really good read!

Call Me Athena: Girl from Detroit
And…I think that is it from me this morning! Not ten but I think five really solid books out of my comfort zone!
I will see you all soon!
You reminded me that I wanted to read Hogfather next month. I’m planning to read some holiday books in December.
I also want to add the kid Terry Pratchett series I bought on Kindle this year. I’ve read a few TP books, but for whatever reason I have not read anywhere near all of them. I should read more!

I am looking forward to reading some holiday books in December! I want to read Hogfather then watch the tv series (movie?).
I wanted to read that kid series with Wyatt too. You have just reminded me! I guess we are reading some Pratchett next year!

I do too. Sometimes you just need to mix it up a bit!

I haven’t heard of any of these, but the one in verse intrigues me!

Pratchett is great. Mort was my first one and I loved it. Hope you enjoy these if you get around to them.

I used to know someone who loved the Terry Prachett books! I’ve never read any, but did see the British adaptation of a couple and while very different, I did love one of them. It was so funny! Thanks so much for visiting my list!

Terry Pratchett has so many books! That fact in itself is intimidating! Lol. Especially as I am not usually a series reader. I am hoping to watch some of the adaptations after I read them as a reward!

I’d have a hard time coming up with a list too but I do know that the 52 Book Challenge often pushes me to read books outside my comfort zone. I was really surprised to find that I enjoy most books written in verse! I didn’t think I would and I can’t say I love them all but of the 3 or 4 I stumbled upon this year I enjoy

Oh that is good to hear!! I am so curious about Call Me Athena but the whole verse thing kind of makes me nervous! Lol.

I have never read a Terry Pratchett! Criminal, probably haha. Also I am curious about Dungeon Crawler Carl. I’m not sure it’s going to be for me but I am having some FOMO because everyone is reading it.

Lol I feel the same! But, I will have at least one read by Christmas. Hopefully. Lol.
I am too. I feel like everyone has read it but me by this point!

Where to start with Terry Pratchett … I love him which is quite easy to tell by my naming four of my cats after characters of his so far! Actually Gundel was supposed to be one, too, but Gundel Gaukeley – the German name for Disney’s Magica de Spell – won by a smidge as she was not round enough for the Pratchett name.
I stumbled upon Pratchett by accident (I started with the witches) and after two pages I never looked back.
Sci-fi and apocalyptic settings are really too far out of my comfort zone. Tried them, didn’t work for me.

I am excited to start them! I am nervous but I feel like I will really like them. I love that four of your cats were named after his characters!! That is a very very good sign about how good these books are. Lol.
Yeah, I am very uncertain how those will go. We will see. Lol.

I think most important is that if you like, you like them, and if you don’t, you don’t, and that won’t make the world explode.
No matter if it’s the Pratchetts, sci-fi, apocalypse, fantasy, cozy crime, nonfiction … isn’t it just wonderful to know there are books for all of us in the world? 😀

Terry Prachett for me too!
Have you tried A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers? I tjhink it’s easy scifi, and short. And lovely.
For novel in verse, I highly recommend Brown Girl Dreaming. very accessible, and powerful. I included a couple of excerpts in my review, so you can check: https://wordsandpeace.com/2014/12/31/short-reviews-poetry/
I did something special for today: https://wordsandpeace.com/2025/11/11/scifimonth-2025-science-fiction-a-z/

I loved A Psalm for the Wild-Built! That is one reason I am going to try that other series by her. Although a tea monk is very far removed from space and spaceships. Lol.
I will look that one up! Thank you!

My husband is a huge Terry Pratchett fan, and has made it his mission recently to find the perfect book to introduce me to his writing.

It is good for our brains to be challenged with something new but I don’t think that’s enough to take me outside my reading comfort zone. Because of that I’m not familiar with any of these books or authors. Based on what you wrote, I feel like I should know the first one.

I get that too! As a reader it is also nice to just have our books not push us outside our boundaries but be there as comforts and most of all enjoyable! If it is too far out of our zone that it is no longer fun to read then it’s not worth it.!

I’m sure not all novels in verse are created equal, but I’ve read several that were done very well and read surprisingly easy. It does take a moment to adjust to poems instead of chapters, but there’s some lovely things that can be done with the freedom of verse.

I have seen that there are some middle grade books done in verse – I think that might be a better place to begin, maybe?

MG might be a great place to start! The ones I’ve read and enjoyed most have been YA 🙂
There’s also the William Shakespeare Star Wars books – not strictly “novel in verse” in that they are set up as if they are a Shakespeare play, but a fun way to get your brain thinking about story in a different format/context 🙂

What great choices, Erin. I also would really need to step outside of my comfort zone to read Pratchett. Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog last week.
