Friday Morning Coffee Catch Up

Hello everyone!! We are close to afternoon at this point but I am still counting it as morning. Why not?

Wyatt and I are enjoying a fairly lazy morning. We had another crazy week, just trying to get everything in place for September and school and Cub Scouts.

However, I do have some very exciting news. Wyatt, for the very first time in two years, took steps without any assistance from anyone else. He was using a gait trainer, and it took every bit of his determination and strength, but he did it. I literally had tears running down my face as we drove home. It has been a long long road back to walking for us. Years ago, before Covid, before epilepsy, Wyatt was walking with a walker, and about to graduate to crutches. Then epilepsy reared its ugly head, and the medicine they gave him to control his seizures changed my boy. He was more lethargic, less Wyatt, in every area of life. In school, with mobility, with everything. He gained weight, adding to the mobility issues. I tried to tell doctors for months and months that I thought it was causing him other problems, and finally, one doctor listened to me. She looked over his file and 100% agreed, and said he needed off that medicine ASAP. Now he is on a new one, and my little boy is back. Slowly but surely we are getting there, but seeing years stolen.. I can’t even describe it. Anyway. We are mending, we are working, and nobody harder than Wyatt.

So yeah, I shed some big tears over this moment. He walked most of that hallway under his own power.

Last Saturday’s game night we had guests! My dad and stepmom joined us, and it was such a great time. Wyatt enjoyed sharing some of his favorite games with them, especially the game Outfoxed. He really loves that one. It was a fun night, and we all ate way too much junk – cookies and candy and chips and popcorn. But we had fun!

We of course went to the library this week, and checked out a pile of books. Then we met one of my friends at the coffeehouse to discuss Cub Scouts and just hang out. Nicole and I seem to have a lot to say to each other all at once and Wyatt was so good while we chatted. We stopped at the cake bakery for cake pops as a reward. I also finished up Vera Wong while we waited for her (we got there early) and oh my gosh, it was so entertaining. I loved Vera! I’m behind on book reviews so I need to do a post on that soon too.

We are finally, finally basically an official unit for Scouts. That was my biggest focus this week and we are pretty much there. I started this unit for Wyatt and let me tell you, it was so much more red tape than I was expecting, but I made it through and we are pretty much on the other side now. Our first official meeting is in September, and then our first activity is already planned as well. The kids have the opportunity to go to a Detroit Tigers game and run out on the field, meet a ballplayer, get a game ball, a whole bunch of cool stuff. I am super excited and I think it is a great way to kick off our scouting adventures!

I also met up with my friend crew for a ladies night in Kelly’s backyard. It was a very very much needed night out! I think we have all been just going and going this summer and it was nice to finally meet up again and just relax and laugh, because we laughed. A lot. Especially over a story about an airport and an electric guitar!

I also finished my second embroidery piece. I am still learning but having fun! I haven’t rinsed the outline yet, but I think it is ok. I need to not leave so much space in between but I will get there. It is for fun and I am having fun.

Now some random pics!

Have a good one everyone!

Love seeing Wyatt take those steps! I must have missed you guys when you came through the library. Do you by chance go to the center for exceptional families? That therapist looked like one my son worked with named Kayla!

Oh that is wonderful about Wyatt and his steps! It’s so gratifying to finally have a doctor that listens to you as the authority you truly are when it comes to your kids isn’t it? I am so sorry for the years you’ve lost but I bet it feels great to start working in the right direction.

    1. I sobbed right there and then in the office when she said she agreed with me. It had been so many months of me asking so many doctors if they thought it was the medicine, because I knew it was the medicine, I knew it, and I was just ignored. When she said she agreed, it was so much relief that I just cried. We have gone to this doctor since Wyatt was born and we love her – she gets things done, she listens, she cares. And I am so happy to put those years behind us. It is hard work to come back from but we will do it! We are not afraid of working hard over here – we will just keep moving!

  3. Best news and post EVER! Oh Erin, this just totally warms my heart. Finding a doc who listens and then seeing such a glorious and momentous event — I can only imagine. And the scouts! Very cool. Rick was big into scouts — he’ll be pleased to hear this! I hope you write more about this.

    1. Thank you Jeanie!!! He was working with his whole being to take steps down that hallway. It was amazing. And I love his PMR doctor – she is awesome.

Oh that is cool about Rick! We are a little overwhelmed since neither of us were ever in anything organized like this, but we will figure it out. Lol.

  5. Health care providers (and I was one of them) need to remember to listen to what family members have to say with more credibility. They are the ones who are with their loved ones and can notice subtle (and not so subtle) changes. Good for you to advocate for Wyatt! I’m glad he’s making substantial leaps forward.

  6. I saw his walking on Instagram and was so excited. He is working so hard and just killing it I’m so proud of him and excited for you. I’m so glad you were able to find a doctor who would work with you and for Wyatt. That’s so frustrating when you feel like you’re talking to a wall or just being dismissed. I loved Vera too! I’m so excited to see there will be another book coming up next year.

    1. Thank you Katherine! He is such a tough kid. And yes, I am so happy that we finally got a resolution to that. I broke down as soon as she told me she agreed. Such relief and also validating, that I didn’t imagine it.

I am too!! It was so good and I can’t wait to see what vera gets up to in the next one!

  7. What a fun sounding week, with some big things to celebrate! Congrats on Wyatt making so much progress – that’s a huge deal. And it looks like you crammed a lot into one week: reading, socializing, a game night, and some really cool pics. What more could you ask for, right?

      1. That’s so exciting for you all, but especially great for Wyatt! Kudos to him (and you too) for all the hard work you guys have been putting in to see these kind of results.

I know what you mean about getting busy. Most of the time my life is pretty quiet, but then it will randomly get busy and at the end of it, I’m just drained and need a week to recuperate. 🤣 But I always try to squeeze in social events, because it’s the fun times i remember, you know? It looks like you’re making some great memories with Wyatt, and I enjoy seeing this kind of post on your blog because it always makes me smile. I hope you have an awesome week!

      2. He did phenomenal last week and this week. He is really putting some things together and moving! He works so hard.

Yes!! That is us. Most of the time we have this quiet little life and right now we are in this period of lots of activity and I can’t wait for everything to get back to our slow routines. We are having fun but phew it is tiring!

And thank you! I am glad that we could make you smile! I hope that you do as well!

  8. Aww, yay! Bravo Wyatt! 😀 That’s awesome! And kudos to you, Momma, for fighting for him/his meds ❤

Excellent book haul – I’m quite intrigued by the Full Moon Coffeeshop, and Midnight Feast was a wild, wild read!
