It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

Last week was very full – we had Wyatt’s 24 hour EEG (and thank you everyone for all of your supportive comments last week!), Dream Night at the Detroit Zoo, and our Strawberry Full Moon Party with Mermaid Girl. I am wiped out y’all and I am looking forward to a very lazy day today. Although I am sure I will do a few things, I am going to *try* to take it easy!

Read Last Week:

As I suspected, I did not have time to read very much. However, I did a quick read through of a non-fiction book, and also listened to a book, so I am counting those.

Sunflower Houses by Sharon Lovejoy was a really neat book with a ton of cool ideas to do with young children in the garden. I didn’t read every page or word, but I did read the parts that interested me. And there were quite a few! I told Billy we need a bigger yard so I can do everything I want that I read about in this book. However, if I have to settle for one or two, I am choosing the construction of the “sunflower house” from the title, and the flower clock! The flower clock sounded so cool. They have a list of flowers that open for every hour of the day, a full 24 hours of flowers opening, and instructions on how to arrange it. I 100% want to do this!

I read Botanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland before, but I feel like I got so much more out of listening. Maybe because folk tales are part of oral tradition, that hearing them read out loud just added so much to them. I started listening while we did our overnight in the hospital, and it was so relaxing. I really enjoyed it. (If you have Kindle Unlimited both the book and audio are available as part of your membership!)

Reading This Week:

Lodge looks amazing and I didn’t get a chance to look through it last week – it is in my plans for today though! I did manage to read about 50 pages of The Shop on Royal Street so far, and I am enjoying it greatly. When I was younger I was obsessed with New Orleans and read every book set there (it felt like), watched all the movies, did all the things, even visited from Michigan 5 or 6 times, the last being the week before Katrina. I would love to go back and need to get that planned.

I also picked up At the Bottom of the Garden, which sounds awesome. It is a chunkier book so it will probably take me a while to read but oo, it will be fun!

Watching and Listening:

Last week Lisa, Katja, and I finished up with our Spring of Cary Grant movies, ending on Notorious. However, neither Lisa nor I have posted our thoughts on it yet! Look for it this week. Lisa is planning on doing a Summer of.. but isn’t sure which actor/actress she is going to settle on. I will probably not participate this season (well, I might watch some of them but I won’t be posting) because summer is unpredictable over here and we have a lot planned. I already had a hard time in spring sticking to a schedule and I don’t want to mess up her blog plans with my tardiness all the time! I did enjoy almost all of the Cary Grant movies we watched (with the exception of one) and it is hard to pinpoint my favorite.

Billy and I are also catching up on the American version of Ghosts, watching reruns of Newhart, Full Steam Ahead, which was produced by the BBC, and is hosted by our favorite historians. This is all about the golden age of steam and how trains affected Victorian Britain.

I was listening to the Botanical Folk Tales book and finished it up last night. As for podcasts, I am listening to National Park after Dark, Going West, and Night Owls. Musically, Wyatt and I have been listening to a lot of Tom Petty and the Wildflowers album.

And that is it from our corner of the world! What is going on in your world?

  1. Cary Grant! An actor that can do everything, I think.

I hope you will share any projects you take on from the Sunflower Houses book. I am learning a lot lately about native plants, and I’m spending more time in my gardens.

I’m glad everything went smoothly with Wyatt’s lengthy EEG.

    1. I had no idea how multi-talented Cary Grant was! I have enjoyed this Spring of Cary Grant that Lisa and I have been doing.

I will! I probably will not get to either of those big ones this year – all of the garden centers around here are all out of plants! And dirt! Is that an issue where you are? I will more than likely order the seeds for the clock this winter and get it started in the spring. I am super excited about it, already. LOL.

      Thanks Deb!

    1. I decided it was time to re-enter the world with Wyatt again post Covid, and well, I guess I just threw the doors wide open! It’s my goal for the summer – to do as much as possible to enrich his world this summer. Then we can slow down a bit in the fall. LOL.

    1. It was busy! Half of it at least was fun stuff though, so that made it better. 🙂

I have been watching so many more older movies and it has been really fun. Of course, we also watched Dungeons and Dragons and I loved that too. Lol.

I hope the 24 hour EEG went well for Wyatt. Sounds like you did quite a few fun things as well! Hopefully your were able to get some rest this weekend. I am glad you have been able to get in some reading. It’s been ages since I read one of White’s books. I love her writing style. That’s funny that you mention Newhart. My husband and I were just reminiscing about that show the other day. I hope you have a great week!

    1. It wasn’t too bad! I kept him busy and entertained and he was so good about being confined and playing with only the things we brought.

I haven’t read her for a while either, and I am really enjoying this new series!

I remember watching Newhart as a kid with my mom and dad, and now Wyatt watches with us! It’s on Amazon Prime if you want to revisit it!

Glad to hear you got through the 24-EEG and I hope it helped in Wyatt’s health! I always thought Cary Grant was so handsome and suave. I’ve watched a few of the Alfred Hitchcock movies with him in them but it’s been a long time.

Loved The Shop on Royal Street! Hope you love it, too! Happy reading and hope you get some rest after a busy week!

    1. Whew we made it! Wyatt was so good at putting up with it all. 🙂 We are still waiting on the doctor but we might not hear anything until we see her at the end of the month.

Cary Grant – I never knew how amazing an actor he was, or how handsome!

I am loving The Shop on Royal Street!!

    1. I did, and it was sooooo nice. I just puttered around here and there, reading, watching tv, hanging out with Billy and Wyatt in the yard. It was a great relaxing day.

And my books are so good! I haven’t started the fairy one yet but the other two I am enjoying.

I’m glad Wyatt’s EEG is behind you! The evening at the zoo looked like so much fun! There’s something magical about being somewhere after dark when it wouldn’t ordinarily be open, right?

We have been watching lots of Cary Grant over here! Now, we’re onto Arnold Schwarzenegger…he is no Cary Grant…that’s for sure!

I love Tom Petty and Wildflowers is such a beautiful album. What a loss. I wish I’d been able to see him in person. Mike has been listening to lots of Harry Chapin lately. I listen to a mixed batch when I listen to anything. It could be show tunes or classic rock (never country unless it’s Patsy Cline or the Highwaymen)!

Have a fabulous week, Erin! I hope you’ll find time to do 10 on the 10th!

    1. Phew me too. I am hoping we don’t have to do another for at least another year.

Yes! It was so fun to be there after hours, and with so few other people. It was like we had the place to ourselves!

LOL at the Arnold vs. Cary comparison. SOOO different!!!

Tom Petty – seriously, that was a terrible loss. What a talented musician, and the Wildflowers album is a favorite of mine. So funny that you mention country. Billy and I grew up listening to Nirvana and Alice in Chains type of music, and now… country. We never listened to it before Wyatt was born, but even when Wyatt was super tiny and little, he seemed to love it. He would be crying and he would only really settle down if I danced around with him to the Zac Brown Band. So now we listen to country. It is crazy and if you had asked 17 year old me if I would ever think I would be listening to country one day, I would have said no, absolutely never. But, here I am. Lol.

I am planning on it! What is the date today? Lololol!

That was a busy week! I’m not a gardener because most flowers make me weezy and sneezy. I do love to see pictures of them though. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  6. I love the idea of the flower clock! You will have to share your progress of it. I’m so glad you’re going to try and take it easy this week. You’ve had a crazy time of it lately and must be feeling a bit wrung out. Cary Grant is one of my absolute favorite actors and I’m so glad you enjoyed the movies you watched. Have a great week!

    1. Isn’t that such a neat idea! I love that it even includes evening and night flowers!

I feel exhausted today. LOL. I am planning on taking the rest of the week OFF! Well as off as I can. Just lots of playtime over here.

I have enjoyed them! Notorious will be my last Grant post on Thursday. It was a nice ride!

  7. Such a busy week. But I do love these insights into such a different life from mine.

Today I got to go for a walk with my friend and her new baby – so lovely to walk around in the sun catching up and she’s doing so well, I’m super proud of her.
