Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Take Place in Another Time

This Week’s Prompt: Books Set in Another Time (These can be historical, futuristic, alternate universes, or even in a world where you’re not sure when it takes place you just know it’s not right now.)

I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted to do this one! I decided to do a decade by decade book for each decade of the 1900s. The century that I was born in… lol. Most of these are books that I have read; a few are from my TBR.

A Reliable Wife (1909)|| Girl Waits With Gun (1914) || The Great Gatsby

A Reliable Wife was such a wild ride of a book! It is set in Wisconsin in 1909. All of Goolrick’s books blew me away when I read them.

Girl Waits with Gun is one on my TBR – and I am pretty sure I learned about it from TTT! It is set in 1914.

The Great Gatsby -because really, what better book to represent the Roaring 20s?

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek || City of Thieves || When Women Were Dragons

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is another TBR book. I had never heard of the Horseback Librarians until a few years ago when we went to a historical event at Greenfield Village near us and there was a woman dressed as one. She told Wyatt and I about these women and gave Wyatt a library card. It was really cute. Anyway, this book is set in 1936. I need to get to it.

City of Thieves is one of my favorite books ever. I recommend this book over and over and over again. It is is set in 1942 in Russia.

When Women Were Dragons is physically sitting on my shelf and I need to read it. Maybe I will this spring. It sounds amazing. It is set in 1955.

The Girls || Joyland || My Best Friend’s Exorcism

The Girls has been on my TBR for a long time. I really need to get to it eventually. It seems like a good summer book so maybe this summer. This book is set in the 1960s.

Joyland is another favorite of mine. I have found that my favorite books by Stephen King are sort of weird compared to other people lol. This is one of them. I just love the whole story- the new adultness, the summertime working at the amusement park, a haunting, a mystery, some supernatural things. It was fantastic. It is set in the 1970s.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism is such a creepy gross book! I loved it though. It is so 1980s that I had to list it here.

The Mall

I am a Gen Xer and yes, so much of my young adulthood centered around the mall. I haven’t read this but it is on my TBR. It sounds like a good read! (if you have read it let me know what you thought!)

It seems like there are so many good books coming out! Honestly, I found a lot of these through other bloggers on these Tuesday posts!

A Language of Dragons by S.F. Williamson looks so good!! Bletchley Park, dark academia, dragons… I can’t wait! And do I have to? No, because this came out Jan. 2nd! I just need to get it!

The Baby Dragon Cafe by A.T. Qureshim. I know I have mentioned this one, and I think I actually saw it the first on another Top Ten Tuesday. It just looks so adorable!!

The Rainfall Market – that cover is just gorgeous.

The Green Kingdom: I love the plot of this story, where the main character needs to figure out botanical riddles!

Whale Eyes: This memoir comes out in March, and I am very much excited to read it. It is “told through an experimental mix of intimate anecdotes and interactive visuals, this book immerses readers in James’s point of view, allowing them to see the world through his disabling eye conditions.” I have been trying to read more and more books that give voice to the disabled community, as my son is a part of it. I want him to read and see books that reflect this representation, because books are mirrors as well as windows.

The Secrets of Underhill: This one is a fantasy middle grade, and the main character is the daughter of a traveling arborist who treats magical trees.

The Curious Kitten at the Chibineko Kitchen: I can’t wait, it just sounds so darn good. It also sounds like one that might me cry, but that is ok.

Vera Wong’s Guide to Snooping (on a Dead Man): I loved Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice to Murderers and I am looking forward to this next installment of her shenanigans.

Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales: I love love this cover! Little snail!!! Ok, and I love this series too.

And finally, the last one for this post.

Greenteeth by Molly O’Neill: Growing up, I love all books about faeries, and I remember just poring over the Brian Froud books over and over again, and reading the different tales of the magical creatures – like Jenny Greenteeth. I am excited to read this version about Jenny.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

Hello everyone! It’s the first Sunday post of the new year!

The last few days we have been wrapping up the holidays, putting our house back to normal, and having a few last hurrahs before school starts tomorrow.

I also started the year out with two books I really enjoyed!

I got both of these for Christmas, and I was pretty excited about both of them! The Woodsmoke Women’s Book of Spells was absolutely perfect for this time of year, and full of mystery and magic. I loved it. Dead Voices is from a middle grade series and this series is actually a little scary in parts. Lol. Maybe because the author also wrote The Bear and the Nightingale, which also sort of gave me the creeps in parts.

Reading This Week:

My intention this week is to read Dead of Winter. I just have a ton of books here to read – books from my birthday still, from Christmas, the library. I almost have too many to decide! However, this one finally came in for me from the library so I am hoping to begin with this one. And the weather here is not snowy, but it is super cold so I feel like it will be a perfect time to read it and really get wrapped up in the atmosphere.

Watching and Making:

Billy and I have been watching the American Ghosts the past few days, catching up on it. We also watched the newest season of McDonald and Dodds. It was really a spectacular season. As far as movies, we watched The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, which made it under the wire as one of my favorite movies of 2024!

As for what we have been making, Billy has been working on some leatherworking projects, while I started a new embroidery with a unicorn and woodland animals. It is so cute.

And, Lisa at Boondock Rambling and I have our first Cozy Crafternoon this Saturday at 1pm EST. If you would like to sign up just send me an email at crackercrumblife@gmail.com, and I will add you to our Zoom! We are just hoping to break up these wintery days after Christmas and avoid the blahs. We will just chat and craft and color and do whatever!

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

Hello everyone! I hope you are doing well, and that if you celebrate Thanksgiving, you have a good one, no matter what you do.

I haven’t been reading much lately. I don’t know what is going on, but I am in a bit of a slump which stinks because I have so many new books and I love them and I am excited to read them all. I just can’t sit still these days. Maybe after the holiday I will settle down.

I did read one book, just a little one.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to like this one. I am not really a sci-fi person, but if there was a book that was cozy sci-fi, it is this one. I found myself imagining the roads that Sibling Dex and Mosscap were taking, the slow days, the conversations and the tea, and I just fell in love with this book. It was different, it was thought-provoking, it was gentle, and it made me smile.

A few short quotes from a book that I saved so many from:

“No matter what I’m wonderful.”

“We don’t have to fall into the same category to be of equal value.”

This slim book is so filled with goodness. Even if this is not usually your jam, I say give it a whirl.

Reading This Week:

I picked this up over the weekend and immediately fell in love with it. Maybe my slump is over? Wyatt and I are having a whole week of hygge this week – no real school, just reading and art and baking, and this book seemed perfect for those curl up and read moments ahead.

We are all finished with Comfy Cozy Cinema and it feels weird to not have a Sunday movie all ready to go. Besides that, we are watching The Spiderwick Chronicles that star none other than my teenage celebrity crush, Christian Slater. I loved him so much as a teen. Lol. I can still probably quote Heathers and Pump Up the Volume. And, I have to say, as an adult maybe I still have a bit of a crush on adult him.

Top Ten Tuesday: How My Reading Habits Have Changed

Hello everyone! Today’s prompt is about how my reading habits have changed through the years. I am not sure I will get to ten but we will see how I do!

First, probably the biggest change of all – the number of books I read a week. Before I had Wyatt, I could read 2 or 3 books a week. Now I am lucky if I can read 1! I would spend whole weekends reading all day sometimes.

Second, the amount of books I would buy for myself has changed as well since before and after motherhood. Now I buy way more books for Wyatt, and maybe one a month for myself. I always used the library like crazy, but now the majority of the books that I read come from the library first. Then if I love it I buy it or add it to my wishlist. I used to buy a lot more books for myself a month. I don’t mind though honestly, I feel like now when I do buy a book I appreciate it more.

What I read has changed through the years too. I used to read more fantasy, romantasy , historical fiction, and horror, while now I read more thriller, mystery, and middle grade. I still read every the other genres that I used to, but just less of those and more of others. I feel like I cycle through phases of reading and what I like to read. Does everyone do this?

Hmm what else..

Oh! I used to read right before bed, sometimes for hours. I can’t do that now, I will just fall asleep immediately!

I still take a book with me wherever I go – now though I usually have my book and Wyatt’s book too. He loves books just as much as I do.

I also listen to audiobooks occasionally now, which I never really did. I like to listen while I stitch or clean.

I have also started annotating and highlighting and underlining in my books. I have my little setup next to my bed, and have a highlighter and one of my favorite fine point cat pens in my purse, along with some book tag things for when I am out as well. I like to match the stickers to the cover too.

I loan my books out more freely now too. Before they were all my precious and now I feel like passing them on so others can read them is more important to me.

My Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag

So, the clouds outside are gathering and dark, the wind is picking up, and storms are on the way. Chores are done for the night, I have some Ginger Turmeric Tea next to me on the table (although tonight I wish it was wine!) and I thought this would be the perfect time to write this post!

I’ve seen this around on BookTube and by other book content creators and thought it sounded fun!

Is it just me or does it sort of remind you of those senior superlatives in high school?

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2024

Hands down, the best book that I have read so far this year.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024

This book was such a fantastic follow up to the first in the series, Gladwynn Grant Gets Her Footing by Lisa Howeler. I love Gladwynn and her vintage style, as well as the homeschooling mom who is also the barista. Such a fun series!

3. New release you haven’t read yet but want to.

I love this series set in Northern Michigan in one of my favorite places in my home state, the Traverse City area. I need to pick it up – it looks like the perfect summer read!

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

I absolutely loved The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and I can’t wait for this new book to come out! And I have to wait all the way until December!!

5. Biggest disappointment.

The Darling Buds of May. Loved the show, did not like the book. At all. That has never happened to me before! I do love this cover though.

6. Biggest surprise.

I received The Magic All Around from the publisher and I didn’t know much about it prior to reading it. However, once I picked it up I could barely put it down. It was so good, I could not stop reading it.

7. Favorite new author. (Debut or new to you)

I am late to the party on Sager, and I wish I had picked up his books sooner! I just finished The Last Time I Lied today and again, it was another book I could not stop reading. It was crazy good, and had so many twists and turns! I can’t wait to read another of his books!

8. Newest fictional crush.

I wouldn’t say crush but I would definitely like to hang out with Tress and talk about her adventures and see her cups.

9. Newest favorite character.

See above.

10. Book that made you cry.

Of course it is a middle grade. I loved this book! I had never heard of it honestly when I picked it up at a used book sale, I just thought it looked neat, with that cute little house and the tree. And it was a cute little book…with the exception of the part that made me cry!! It was the loss of an animal friend that did it, of course.

11. Book that made you happy.

Another middle grade! I one hundred percent adored this book, and while it gave me some anxiety, it ended up all working out and just left me with the warm fuzzies.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

It’s a tie for me on this one. I just love love love that cover of Watership Down and I was so happy that Billy and Wyatt got it for me, but then that cover of Tress is fire.
