Wednesday Morning Coffee Catch Up

Hello everyone!! We are out of coffee and I am drinking an instant coffee from a Via pack Billy found that was leftover from his camping trip this morning. This does not bode well…. or I can look it like I am lucky that he had that. I think I will view it that way, Billy pulling some magic out of his bag.

Anyway… we have been super busy it feels like. We are just in the middle of so many house projects and taking care of business around here, and also making sure that we have some fun too. It is summer after all.

I mentioned on my Sunday-Monday post that last week was like the perfect quintessential summer week. We had a bike ride, trips to the library, a softball game, ice cream, dinner out (at Wyatt’s request, he is such a homebody but asked to go out and we were so shocked that we did!), reading, and for me, some embroidery as well. Then over the weekend we had our Saturday night game night, and Sunday a party! Let me tell you about all that.

On weekends we have a bit of a routine – Friday night is pizza night, and Saturday night is game night. Wyatt loves game night, which makes me so happy! Usually I put together our little snack tray and it is half cookies/candy or some sort of junk, and then the other half is healthy. This week I let Wyatt pick everything for our snacks and who would have guessed it, but he picked all cookies and candy. That plate by the way is our plate for us all to share, and we didn’t eat everything thank goodness. It was fun though!

Sunday night we had our Full Moon party! We joined the Kids Moon Club from Wilder Child when Wyatt was like 3 or 4, as something to do and make the long winters more fun. I didn’t take him out too much during the winter due to ~germs~ and he was so tiny at the time, my little tiny preemie boy who remained small for a long time. So we did stuff here to have fun. For a year or two we followed the club, doing all the things, and then as years passed, sometimes we would join in, other times not. (it’s a lifetime membership) This year and last year Mermaid Girl started joining us and it has been super fun. This year she has joined us as well, and we have been mixing it up and taking inspiration from the “official” club activities but have been doing our own things too. This month for sure. This month is the Buck Moon but we decided to make it the Blueberry Moon instead, and had a blueberry party! We also invited Mermaid Girl’s whole family this time around, and it was fun to have Mermaid Girl and Wild Child here together for the fun.

We had blueberry drinks – blueberry lemonade for the older kids, blueberry hard cider for the adults, and I kept the menu simple. Grilled cheese all around, with fancy cheese and bread for the adults and kids grilled cheese, with Kraft singles and white bread. We also had spinach salad with walnuts, goat cheese, and blueberries, and a lemon blueberry trifle that was absolutely devoured.

The craft activity this time was painting tshirts, and it was so neat to see what the kids all chose to do- and for Wild Child to get in on it too. They all really enjoyed it. They also made a blueberry moon collage, which turned out really well! After crafting, we went outside, threw down a blanket, and the kids played with a frisbee and with Wyatt’s metal detector. We all had such a good time!

We also added a new fish to our family last week! His name is Star and he lives in Wyatt’s bedroom, near the end of his bed so Wyatt can watch him swimming around. He is super tiny for a betta and I kind of wonder if he is young. He seems to be happy with his new home, as he made a bubble nest! This really has nothing to do with happiness and is actually a sign that he is ready for a lady friend but all betta owners like to think it is because their fish is happy.

Here is little Star! His tank is sort of a weird eerie yellow because the wood (Manzanita) leaks tannins into the water that is actually good for the fish but it makes the water yellowish. It dissipates after a while though, like a week or two or three. Right now it is funny though because it looks so 70s to me. He put so much work into this bubble nest. I didn’t have the heart to tell him though that he is not getting a lady friend.

I think tomorrow I am going to do a little post on our menagerie. It has been a while!

And now just some randoms for the roll! That goofy one of Wyatt and I… we were waiting at CVS for my tetanus shot that I needed. My arm still hurts!

And that is it for today! Try to do something that makes you smile today!

Top Ten Tuesday: Debut Novels

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hello everyone! Today’s theme for Top Ten Tuesday is Debut Novels I Enjoyed (A debut novel is an author’s first published book. You could also choose to share genre or age group debuts if you’d prefer, such as an adult fiction author’s first YA book or a mystery writer’s first romance.) (submitted by Angela @ Reading Frenzy)

I sort of struggled with this one. I didn’t know how far back I wanted to go, or if I should stick with newer books so I did a mix of both!

Fire Keeper’s Daughter and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Fire Keeper’s Daughter may have been Angeline Boulley’s first book but she sure came out swinging. This book was simply amazing. (as was her second book, Warrior Girl Unearthed) Boulley is on my instant buy list when she releases a new book. And she is a Michigan author, which makes me feel so much more connected to her books. I have been to the areas she writes about, grown up in this state, and did not realize some of what was happening in other parts of Michigan.

Like everyone, I was completely in love with the Harry Potter series when they were published! What a fun world that Rowling created! I mean, who doesn’t want to go to Hogwarts with those amazing holiday parties, and those awesome classes. I would like to take a magical creatures class – and probably want to raise a tiny baby dragon too. I can totally relate to Hagrid. He may be in fact the character I most relate to in the whole series. Hmmm.

Sharp Objects and Looking For Alaska

Again, two totally different authors and reads, but both of these authors pack a wallop. (I am apparently into that sort of imagery today) I don’t think I have ever read a book by either of these authors where I didn’t feel like I had been hit by a truck after finishing the book. They are just so emotional and just good. You know what I mean. Sharp Objects – dang. I also watched the series with Billy and he was blown away just by the tv show, which was very well done.

John Green has a talent for writing these compelling characters that draw you in with their charisma or bravery and then he just pulls the rug out from under you and makes you cry. Looking for Alaska was incredible.

The Hobbit and Legends and Lattes

I hope I didn’t have to be alive when some of these books debuted, because I was not around when The Hobbit was first published. I had to include it though, as it is a pretty informative book for my reading tastes and likes. As evidenced by the next book on the list, Legends and Lattes. I can’t see the orcs in Tolkien’s world opening a cafe though.

Outlander and The Hunger Games

I remember when I first read Outlander. Billy and I were on vacation at Shenandoah National Park in Big Meadows Lodge, and I fell headfirst in love with this series (and Jamie Fraser) It still remains one of my favorite series of all time.

The Hunger Games was another series that really grabbed me. It was so very different from other books when it first debuted, much like Harry Potter felt, and I gobbled them up as they were released.

Kristy’s Great Idea and Double Love

I decided to throw it really far back with these two. These were two of my favorite series as a kid!

And that is ten! I can’t wait to see what everyone else chose!

My Sunday-Monday Post

My Sunday Post is hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

Hello everyone! I hope you all had a good week! Ours was pretty good. We had trips to the library, ice cream, reading and sewing, dinner out, walks and bikes rides. It was just a really nice summer week. Today we are having our Full Blueberry Moon party with Mermaid Girl and I am looking forward to that as well. (This is a moon we decided to name ourselves- as far as I know this isn’t one of the names for the July full moon)

Read Last Week:

I love this series! I love Violet and the tree and the bookshop and Emerson. Just all of it really. I like to read them in the season that they are set so by waiting it is sort of like a treat! I have to wait now all the way until winter to read the next in the series.

Reading This Week:

Ooo I have been saving this one too and I am so excited to read it. I started it yesterday and was instantly immersed in this world. This cover is so gorgeous! My dad bought me a copy when we went shopping a few weeks ago and I love the cover and the design and I have a really good feeling that I will love this book.

A Cozy Little Life – In Our Hobbies Era

Book Reviews – A Few Quick Mini Book Reviews

Watching:

We have been watching a few different things this week! We watched The Great British Sewing Bee, finished up season 2 of Dark Winds, and started Reservation Dogs.

Dark Winds is so well done. Billy and I are always hit by how well acted and just how good of a story it is when we watch. It gets intense and and emotional for me as well, as the show touches on the injustices done to the Native Americans that started so long ago and continues today. The show itself takes place during the Vietnam War, and there was a scene where one young man was being shipped off to do his duty, and he doesn’t want to go. He expresses to Bernie his reluctance to go, saying why should he fight for a country that “doesn’t even recognize me as an American”. Oof. And then the involuntary sterilizations that happened in the clinics – all such powerful, gut wrenching truths. It is not light watching. I have not read the books that they are based on by Tony Hillerman but I have been considering reading them.

Zahn McClarnon is in both Dark Winds and Reservation Dogs, and plays two very different law enforcement characters. I have loved him since I saw him in Longmire as Matthias, and it is interesting to see him in Dark Winds as just a force of strength and then in Reservation Dogs, where he is playing a more humorous, silly cop character.

And that is it from me this week! What is going on in your neighborhood?

A Few Mini Book Reviews

Hello everyone! Welcome to my little post about a few books that I have read lately! I am not the greatest book reviewer in the world; mine are sort of haphazard and probably don’t include much depth or insight, but … I just like to share my thoughts and what I liked about the book and how it made me feel.

When I first started reading this one, I was a little unsure if I was going to like it. The main character Yuki was so whiny and immature, and that was reflected in the voice of his character, who is the narrator of this book. It is written as a journal type book, but without journal entries, from Yuki’s perspective so we see everything through his eyes and filter. When the book begins, he suddenly finds himself transported from the city life he is used to, the mountain woodlands of Kaumsari. His family has arranged an apprenticeship and he is very unhappy about this. But as he gets more used to life in Kamusari, the people, their ways, his job, he grows in all ways. It is a real coming of age story and I ended up absolutely loving it. I am hoping to read the sequel this fall.

In the spring I went to a huge used book sale at a local library, and they had grab bags of cozy mysteries for a dollar! I bought a few of the bags, and each bag had like five or ten books in them. As soon as I opened the bag when I got home and saw this one, I knew it would be the first one I would read. I LOVE a lodge setting in the mountains, and a white fluffy kitty? I am so there. I did enjoy this first book in the series, but I did feel at times there was not enough investigating by the main character, if that makes sense. I feel like she got most of her info from the actual police department, as the deputy would just spill all the beans to her. It was interesting though and I am going to definitely read the next in the series as well.

I absolutely loved this book! I don’t usually read romances but this one got my attention because that main character is a snail scientist, and I love snails. Sometimes that is all it takes. Anyway, I absolutely adored it. I loved the journey that Christa’s character went through, and it was handled very well. For those who like a clean romance, this was not a closed door book and there was some swearing for those who dislike that as well. There are some trigger warnings though, for SA. It is brief and not graphic but still upsetting.

I was absolutely glued to this book! Like, I can’t read Riley Sager all the time because everything in my life gets neglected so that I can read. (well not the living people or animals but don’t look at the laundry or dishes while I have one of his books in my clutches) This one was insane. I loved the crumbling house being set against the unraveling of the mystery.. it was just very well done, that idea that everything, the house and secrets were just falling down around the characters in the story. I loved it so much that I immediately ordered a copy for my mom to read. I have to say, I am pretty good at figuring books out and this one, I didn’t see that ending coming!!

Have you read any of these? What were your thoughts?

In Our Hobbies Era

Sometimes I am not great at relaxing. Does that sound weird? Like, if I stop moving and stop working, I feel guilty. I have been trying to change that though, because relaxing is important too. We all need to recharge and do things just for fun, without a purpose other than just that thing, no ulterior motive or need other than just to enjoy. Other than reading I guess lol. And it is way better for my brain than just playing on my phone when I have some downtime.

Some of these may not count as hobbies per se, but…if it is done for recreation or relaxation, I am counting it.

This post does contain Amazon Affiliate Links. If you were to click a link and make a purchase, I would receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What I am Doing:

Stitching and embroidery. I had no idea how much I needed to do something with my hands when I am watching tv. And this is so fun to do .. anytime honestly. I like to listen to podcasts and books and sew, and I even took my project with me to my friend Kelly’s house the other night and stitched on it while we hung out in her yard. I turned this corgi needle punch into a stitching project, but I am actually attempting the embroidery stitches in my new cat project. So far I can do satin, straight, and stem! Woohoo! Nothing fancy but I am having a nice time learning. I think I might make a few things for presents this year, and I have a feeling I might just start putting little embroidered touches on clothes. But I might be getting ahead of myself!

Speaking of Kelly’s yard…this is a pastime I share with my little tribe. Birding. Spotting birds, identifying birds, and even just sitting quietly and listening to birds, letting our Merlin App capture the songs and identifying them for us. I love that app, it identifies the bird/birds and makes a little list. Then when the bird sings again, it lights that bird name up so you can start to learn the songs by ear yourself. I love it. I have added more birds to my life list with the app, and it is so peaceful to just sit with a cup of tea or a glass of lemonade and just listen and let the app do its thing. The other night we were all gathered at Kelly’s, drinking our tea and all of us had our Merlin apps recording. Lol.

I was surprised to catch that Baltimore Oriole on there! We were on a picnic at the park, enjoying a nice breezy day under the trees just relaxing, and I left the Merlin running for a bit to see what I could pick up. We love a picnic in our family, and this just added a little extra to it.

I am also coloring. I feel super weird saying that, but it really is quite relaxing. I now color while Wyatt is drawing or coloring and we just sit there next to each other, listening to music, absorbed in what we are doing. I am just hopping around my Cottagecore coloring book, happily coloring, sharing colored pencils with Wyatt. It is so fun, honestly.

Finally, maybe this isn’t a hobby but since I am not doing it for a job or school I am counting it as one. Annotating my books as I read. My books obviously, not the library’s books. But maybe it is a hobby since I bought some special highlighters and pretty sticky tabs for it. And I love doing it, so I guess that counts! What is funny is that if Wyatt is sitting next to me when I am doing it, he likes to watch me highlight. It must be soothing to watch for him as well. Which I guess makes sense, he watches YouTube channels like Cups and Thoughts with me, and just rests his head on my shoulder, taking it in as well.

And not a hobby or pastime or whatever, but I am also having fun tracking my books graphically.

What Billy is doing:

One thing Billy is doing is leatherwork. Not as frequently as some of his other hobbies, because it requires more time and more space, but he will venture to his worktable and sew a little something. He does beautiful work, and has made gorgeous leather nature bags for Mermaid Girl and my friend Kelly’s daughter E. He still has to make one for Wyatt and one for Lisa’s Little Miss (Lisa over at Boondock Ramblings) but that is a time issue rather than anything else. He did whip up a small tiny cat wallet at my request the other day, and I love it. It is perfect for summer when I just want to carry some cash, my license, and my debit card.

However, what he is making the most are his tiny clay terrarium creatures. I have shared these before but this is what he is working on when he feels like making something. They are so cute, and I have asked him to make some cute ghosts in preparation for Halloween. I think he is going to wait a little longer though, something something about rushing summer… lol. This idea was actually born when he found the little tiny cloches online, and randomly ordered them. He asked what he should do and I said, make me a mushroom. So he did! And then from there he was off and creating these cute little critters!

As a Family:

Painting!

Our library is having its tiny art show again, just like it did last year. These are our entries this year! I am the sunset, Billy is the snail and the plop, and Wyatt is the green snail on a yellow background. We always have fun painting together.

Future Projects:

In true Billy and Erin fashion, we are already thinking of different things we want to make. I have asked him to learn to crochet this winter since I can’t do it no matter how hard I try, and I want him to make a few things. Lol. First however he is working on a little mini paint and go kit. He made small little canvases, and bought a cute little paint set and he took it with him when he went backpacking on Manitou Island a few weeks ago. He has a few things he wants to add and he wants to make a little bag to keep it in for future camping trips or even picnics. I want to make bracelets out of waxed thread and crystals and bells because at heart I am an elf or goblin or something.

I also have a two month free membership to CreativeBug and as I was browsing different project ideas, I found something I wanted to do with Wyatt! It is less hobby and more school, but it sounded really neat. It is a month of painting based on and inspired by different picture books. I thought it would be fun to do in August, to fill those hot yucky days and also to sort of get him used to a school and learning scenario again since we have taken the summer off for the most part.

What about you all? What hobbies do you have?

Tuesday Morning Coffee Catch Up

Good morning everyone! (or afternoon or evening or whenever you are reading this) Wyatt and I have a bit slower week this week as far as appointments go, and that means longer lazy mornings, which we both love.

We have been up to quite a bit around here. Most of it in and around around our house, but also some fun times as well out and about.

Let’s start with…. the out and about.

Last Friday Wyatt and I had a big day out! We started our day at the library, where we picked books to check out and also bought a few from the book sale (even though I literally just got rid of a ton of books…you all know how it is). We also caught up on the summer reading program missions, and picked up all the National Park cards and cryptid cards that he has earned.

Next we headed down the street to the art fair, as we do every year! I usually go twice, once with Wyatt in the morning and once with Billy in the evening, but this year due to weather and schedules I only made it the one time with Wyatt. We had a pretty good time, although it was so hot and humid we were melting. Wyatt was actually really droopy by the time we started back to the car and that was after not stopping at any of the booths on the other side of the street. But that was ok! We went and had fun and then came home. I didn’t feel the need to push ourselves to see everything at the expense of Wyatt being uncomfortable.

I picked up an art print from a local artist named Anthony Brass. Billy and I picked out a squirrel print from his booth last year, and this year I had Wyatt choose a print. He picked a sleeping fawn and I love it! The artist was super nice to Wyatt. He asked Wyatt if he liked to paint, and you all know that Wyatt loves it! So we shared that, and Wyatt told him that he loves to paint snails and wolves, to which the artist agreed with Wyatt, that they are pretty cool. He also showed Wyatt a huge snail that he had painted. I loved that he got down on Wyatt’s level to talk to him – not many people do that and I was surprised to see it from a younger person. It was nice.

We were starting to get really hot and gross so we popped into the ice cream parlor and shared a gigantic scoop of Moose tracks ice cream. I asked for a single – I would hate to see the double – or maybe, I wouldn’t hate it. Hmmm.

After ice cream I scurried us back to the car in search of regular air conditioning and headed home. But first a stop at my friend’s house, who had a present for me!

My friend Mary went to a book signing the other day and had wanted me to go with her. We used to go to book signings together back in the day all the time, and unfortunately I was not able to go. But Mary being the super thoughtful person that she is, not only bought me a book and had it signed, but video called me from the signing and let me “meet” the author RaeAnne Thayne virtually! There was nobody else in line at the time so it worked out and it was really neat. Ms. Thayne also included a bookmark and book darts that she had made.

We also had our very first Cub Scout committee meeting last week as well. Our committee is made up of Billy and I, my brother and sister-in-law, and Mary (see above lol). Mary and Anthony belong to the boat club (rowing boat club) and we used the board room there for our meeting. It is such a cool spot that Billy and I are going to join as well – only $40 for the whole year and it is a very cool place to watch the river and the boats. We are that much closer to making this pack a reality! We accomplished quite a lot.

Now, the home stuff! Billy has been working super hard outside on the ramp. He poured cement for the landing pads, and cleared an area of the yard near the ramp for the A/C unit. We have to move our A/C unit a few feet over now so that is our next step. Once it is moved then the boards can be put on the ramp! We are getting closer to that goal too.

I have been working on updating Wyatt’s room for ages now. This has been a long process! I have been collecting items with his help, buying new furniture that suits him, like a new low dresser that he is able to manage. It is looks like wood but isn’t! It fools everyone. It is wood framed but the drawers are fabric so that Wyatt can open them easily and even if he pulls it all the way out he can’t hurt himself. We are working on him becoming more independent this year, and changing the house to suit him. We are also making his room look outdoorsy/campy and it has been fun to find stuff for his room to echo this theme. I found some cool vintage items and he has picked out some pieces himself, like a yellow owl lamp from Target. We had to go through his books and get rid of a bunch which made me sad but … it is time to make changes. Everything is basically in place – I still have some packing up and unpacking to do, and then the finishing touches including hanging artwork, but it is coming along slowly but surely. And he loves it. Like never wants to leave it! Oh! And we picked out the curtains last night – they are a bit maximalist but I think it will be fun. You are only a little kid once!

So. We were hoping to go to the corgi dog races at a local Celtic festival but opted not to go. The weather was just too hot and humid for kiddo, and it was $50 to get in for all of us. I just couldn’t make the hour drive plus pay that if we were only going to be able to stay 30 minutes. I really wanted to go but I also didn’t want Wyatt miserable from the heat. If anyone has any ideas on how to keep a kid in a wheelchair cool in the summer I would love to hear them. I did buy a cooling towel for him but I am open to all suggestions. He has never been great in the heat but the wheelchair makes it even hotter for him.

So, I took the $50 dollars I would have spent on the tickets and booked an Airbnb near Akron. Then this morning I bought tickets for the train that runs through Cuyahoga Valley National Park! Wyatt loves trains so I hope he will like this. I bought the dome seats, that have covered windows up and around us and I think it will be awesome! It is a two hour train ride and we are going in the fall so it should be beautiful. The dome is not wheelchair accessible but Billy will be able to carry Wyatt up the stairs to our seats.

I think this is a really cool unique way for Wyatt to experience the park. As a person with mobility issues, that can be tough at times. I think this will be a fun way to do that!

Annnnd that my friends, is a wrap! Have a wonderful day, and I hope that whatever you do today, you do something that makes you smile!

My Sunday-Monday Post

Hello everyone!! We had a pretty busy week last week with just life stuff and it being summer. I have been working super hard on Wyatt’s big room update and I have finally made it to the last stage – the decorating. Hanging the artwork, the final touches, etc. It should be done pretty darn soon! It’s been so difficult getting rid of some of his picture books though. We just have so many it is insane – I have collected so many over the years from book sales, garage sales, from book stores and holidays, plus I worked in an elementary school library for years before Wyatt was born and bought books from the Scholastic Book Fair and from the used book fair, making a small library before Wyatt was even a thought. We have been giving them away to people though, and putting them in little free libraries whenever we see them though so that makes me feel better about getting rid of them. They are getting a new life now.

Read Last Week:

Getaway with Murder was a pretty fun and light cozy. I loved the setting of the mountains and the lodge. I also enjoyed the little one or two paragraph chapters from Yeti the cat’s point of view. As for The Only One Left, holy cow what a ride!! It was amazing. I could not stop reading it!!

Reading this Week:

I need a bit of cozy this week after The Only One Left, so I am reading Verse and Vengeance from one of my favorite series, the Magical Bookshop series by Amanda Flower. I really can’t wait to relax with this one later.

Top Ten Tuesday – Books That Feel Like Fall

10 on the 10th – July 2024

I meant to blog more last week, and to go commenting on everyone’s posts but things got away from me! I hope to be more present here this week.

Watching:

We are still watching The Great British Sewing Bee. It is just as wholesome as you think it is. More so even. The judges on this show are more like teachers and you can sense the connection between them and the contestants. We are loving it and it is the ultimate relax show after a long day.

10 on the 10th – Summer Memories!

10 on the 10th is hosted by Marsha from Marsha in the Middle!

Summer. I am not a super fan of summer. If you have visited me before, you probably know that since I say it way too much. I just really don’t like being hot and can be a little bit of a grump about it. However, that doesn’t mean that I don’t have lots of special memories of summer because there have been some fun and wonderful moments that have taken place in the summertime. I may not actually get to ten because I am going to clump things all together.

I’m going to be honest, I would still wear this outfit.

Proposal:

Billy proposed to me in the summertime! It was a summer night and we were at the park and there was a band in the park playing (not for us but in general lol) and they were playing Kiss the Girl from Little Mermaid at the time.

Childhood Memories:

All the good nostalgic 1980s summertime things. Swimming in pools, eating soggy sandwiches and chips after, running through sprinklers and playing frozen tag with the neighbor kids. Riding our bikes to the library, reading in cool air-conditioned rooms. Watching The Monkees reruns with my cousin Brian and playing in his clubhouse that now would be considered a tiny house and he could probably rent it out.

The Street Fair:

It is timely that this post takes place during the week of our annual street fair. I have gone almost every single year of my life, with my mom and dad, with friends, with Billy, with Wyatt, and for many years I even worked 12 hour days the week of street fair at the job I had while I was in college. I have always loved it. The music coming at you from all directions and different areas, the smell of the fried food, the streets filled with booths crammed with art. The past few years I have been going twice – once with Wyatt in the morning as everyone is just starting for the day, and once with Billy for a date night. I can’t wait to do that again this year, although it will be a little more tricky as the weather is supposed to be stormy this week due to Beryl!

This is from Wyatt’s first street fair! Look how tiny. We were still at home here, and I was getting him ready to go. It feels like yesterday!

All those summer vacations…

When I was a kid, we used to go away for my grandmother’s birthday every July, my whole family. I have such good memories of playing in the pool with my cousins and hoarding my game room quarters like a baby dragon. And of course, going up north is a huge thing for Michiganders in the summer! I have so many memories of that as well through the years, again as a child with my family, with Billy as I got older, with my family again after Wyatt was born. Our family trip to the tiny house on the farm a few years ago was very special as well.

Look at little Wyatt and little Mermaid Girl. My heart!

Those teenage years:

One summer in particular stands out. I was maybe just 15 or 16, and I was hanging out with two friends I didn’t really hang out with too often. And then all of a sudden were hanging out all the time at night for some reason. Things are weird as a teen. One of them would borrow his dad’s convertible Mustang and we would drive around all over, the top down and listen to music. Once it was so hot we went swimming at night, floating around the pool watching the bats fly overhead. I only hung out with them for a maybe a month but it was memorable just for that. Although maybe I am still confused about it. Lol.

Billy and I also started dating in the summertime. We saw Jurassic Park in the theater when it first came out (yeppp) as our first date!

We also took many trips to Cedar Point. We would all pile into cars, multiple cars, and would make the road trip to the amusement park where we would spend the day, a huge group of us. I remember when The Raptor first opened at the park, and we got on it. Billy literally saved my life. My seat/shoulder doodad did not lock, and I was swinging it up and yelling to the ride worker who either did not see or hear me and we were in motion. Now this ride immediately starts out wild and keeps going, flipping upside down. Billy told me to sit back, and whammed the safety bar down so hard that it finally locked. I couldn’t breathe maybe but I didn’t fall out!

The Zoo:

We love going to the zoo! We would always go to the night out at the zoo events, which were adult only before we had Wyatt, and they were so fun. They were inexpensive too, and they sold adult beverages and food and you could stroll around the zoo during the twilight hours. It was so cool. The animals were all out and we had so much fun. After Wyatt, it was our first date night out after he was born! I remember we left him with my mom, stepdad, and aunt and uncle and I was super nervous the whole night. We also would do their Bike Safari nights, where people could ride their bikes around the zoo. Unfortunately, like everything, the price for this event skyrocketed so we no longer go but it was fun while we did. Then last year we went to Dream Night at the Zoo, which was for special needs children and their families. We had a blast!

As I sit here and think back, there are just so many memories. Time certainly flies doesn’t it? So many summer trips, day trips to Greenfield Village, peach picking, blueberry picking. Camping. The county fair filled with the sounds of the auctioneer, the cows mooing, the pigs, the goats. The smell of barnyard mixed with fried food. Just lazy days and lazy nights around the house or in the yard. My cousin Michael’s Fourth of July parties. For someone who doesn’t really like summer, I certainly have many many wonderful memories from summers past.

Top Ten Tuesday – Throwback! Books That Feel Like Fall

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hello everyone! This week Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie throwback week! We could choose from any previous topic, and since I am new to participating, there were a lot to choose from. I decided on Books That Feel Like Fall because I really love fall, and could very easily skip the rest of summer.

With that being said, let’s look forward to a future of warm drinks, cozy nights, crisp weather, and jeans and boots and snuggly sweaters!

Morbidly Yours and Haunted Ever After

These two contemporary romances caught my eye because of how different they seem from others. They just look like fun reads for fall, romance that is just more on the spookier side.

Well-Offed In Vermont and Berries and Bones

These give me allllll the fall vibes with these covers!

A Year in the Woods and Crow Talk

I LOVE these covers. I love getting outside in the fall, especially into the woods and these books look perfect for evoking that feeling.

The Hedge Witch of Foxhall and October, October

These are covers to just get lost in. Autumnal, dreamy, magical.

The Dollhouse and Woodwitch

I love middle grade books and these are just so spooky autumn – but not too spooky!

Well now I am definitely in the mood for a matcha latte – not iced! -, a cool evening, my favorite sweater, and a backyard fire.. how about you?

My Sunday-Monday Post

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

Hello everyone! I hope that you had a good week! Last Sunday we were waiting for Billy to get home from his camping trip, and he got home later in the evening that Sunday. We were very happy to see him! The rest of the week was spent working, all of us, in our own ways. Billy at his job and then around the house, Wyatt in therapy (he kicked butt on Wednesday!!), and I have been working on Wyatt’s room. He needed a huge upgrade, as he is now 9, which I can’t believe yet here we are. So I have been going through all of his stuff (sometimes with his help, sometimes not…iykyk) to donate or pitch or keep. It’s been a weird week but a good one.

Read Last Week:

The Easy Life in Kamusari

Oh, I just loved this book. At first, I wasn’t sure about it. The main character was a bit of a whiner and the language/tone/voice was so juvenile – then I realized, duh of course it is, because the character himself is young. Yuki is young adult, who after graduation finds himself as a forestry trainee sent off to a rural village in the mountains, far from his home in the city. This story is a coming of age story, and it was really very beautiful and thoughtful. I am looking forward to reading the second book, Kamusari Tales Told at Night.

Reading This Week:

After The Easy Life I needed something just light, so I grabbed Getaway with Murder off of my cozy mystery TBR shelf. I wanted something I could just relax into before I start this Riley Sager book.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books With My Favorite Color on the Cover – Green!

Watching:

We are back to watching the Great British Sewing Bee. By the time we are ready to relax and watch tv these days we are whipped and kind of collapse. We need something easy to watch! Tonight we are going to watch a movie although which one has yet to be determined! So not too much on this front.

Listening:

While what we are watching has tapered off for the summer, we are listening to things much more. We both love to listen to books and podcasts while we do work around the house. I also listen to something when Wyatt takes his morning after meds nap while I stitch on my embroidery that is more just me stitching than real embroidery but I have fun.

Billy is listening to the audiobook Words of Radiance, in the Stormlight series by Brandon Sanderson.

I am listening to a few different things. Sometimes I listen to the cozy mystery To Fetch a Felon, which is a cozy mystery in the Chatty Corgi series. Sometimes I listen to Silent Came the Monster about the 1916 shark attacks along the Jersey shore. And then sometimes I listen to The Night Owl True Ghost Stories Podcast. (for those of you in Texas, he is a Texan covering stories in and around Austin)

And that is it from around here today! I hope you all are doing well!
