Quick Wyatt Update

Hi everyone. First, thank you guys for all of your well wishes pre-surgery. They meant a lot to me! I just wanted to post a quick update this morning, and I will probably post a video update from me later on. It’s been rough and sometimes I need to talk through things to process them better. It has definitely been rougher on my kiddo, although he is handling things like a champ.

The first few days were very rough on Wyatt. The first 24 hours he was inconsolable from pain and muscle spasms. Literally screaming in pain for 12 hours. However, things have gotten better. His pain seems to be managed and he is able to sleep when he needs to now. He is pretty unhappy about everything and I don’t blame him. They said the worst days are the first few so we are praying he is feeling better in a day or two. He will still have to wear knee immobilizers and a wedge pillow between his legs 24/7 which will take some getting used to, but Wyatt is a trooper. The staff at the hospital was incredible though and did whatever they needed to take care of him.

We were able to bring him home yesterday afternoon, which was both awesome and scary for us as parents. However, we have all made it through the first night and we all were able to sleep. It sort of reminded me of bringing home a newborn, with lots of middle of the night tasks – instead of feedings we gave meds, but it felt the same, waking up, stumbling around, doing what we needed then collapsing back into bed for a few more hours sleep until the next alarm. He is up and watching cartoons and eating some toast this morning. We are praying and hoping for another good day today, and hope that as time goes on things just keep getting better.

We thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and messages about Wyatt.

Thanks for this update! I woke up thinking of you guys today and wondering how you were making out. I am so sorry to hear how rough those first few days are but will definitely be praying it gets better each day from here on out.

  2. I’ve been off for a couple of days and didn’t realize he had had the surgery all ready. I’m glad it went well technically but I’m sure the pain had to be tremendous and so hard for a kid to wrap his brain around. That’s excruciating for a parent, too. I’m glad you’re home and hope that is working out well. Hang in my friend.

    1. It was unreal. And made even more unreal by the fact that the team did not notice post-surgery that his IV had failed, and that he wasn’t receiving pain meds for 2 hours. My poor baby endures so much. However, he is getting back to himself, just slowly and bit by bit. And with a lot of extra gear!

Poor kiddo. I hope the pain has subsided and the healing can continue while Wyatt is cared for by his loving parents. Sending good thoughts to the three of you. This too shall pass, right?

  4. So glad to hear that you are home and he is getting more comfortable. I’m sure it’s going to be quite the long healing process with lots of ups and downs. Take care of yourself and get of reading and rest time for the both of you.

I came to check on the off chance there was some news about Wyatt’s surgery – but not expecting any. I am so relieved to see him, looking tired, but very well, all things considered. I know it’s been incredibly difficult for all of you, but I’m so glad you had great hospital staff and that you are back home now (though I do get that terror at being home at first – after my kid had a procedure we went home same day with instructions about what to do for bleeding etc. and it was so scary!). I’m also really happy to hear you are all able to get some sleep – that makes a huge difference! I didn’t want to inundate you with things to deal with for the first little while, but when it gets to a point where Wyatt is well enough to be feeling bored let me know – we have all been saving up nature pictures and some short videos to send him during his recuperation (I’ve had neighbours and friends sending me whatever they came across too!). Lots of love and well wishes from Canada!

    1. Aw thanks for checking in on my kiddo. He is doing much better it seems, and is getting back to himself. He is chattering much more (he is usually a bit of a chatterbox), laughing, smiling, singing. It’s such a relief to see him feeling better. I hate this whole situation so much but knowing he is doing better makes it easier. And yes! How scary is that! That had to be terrifying!

Sleep has been on and off for me and Wyatt (hmmm Billy however seems to be getting his solid 8…lol) but we are managing. He just can’t get comfortable right now.

Thank you so much! That will be such a cool addition to his recovery, and he will love it! I love that you have other people adding to it as well! I would think that by early next week he will be tired of being stuck inside, and ready for them. Thank you again!

  6. I think I saw this on Facebook too or I’ve dreamt that. Lovely Miso – cats are so sweet when we’re poorly, aren’t they (except when they’re pounding around yelling in our faces, looking at Willa there).

    1. Yes, I did post this on FB and IG. I was trying to cover all my bases – so many people have reached out about him, it has just been so heartwarming.

Miso has been so worried about him! She usually only cuddles with me, but she has wanted to be all over Wyatt right now. I can’t let her either, since I don’t want her to walk on his legs, obviously. Poor baby. I will let her lay on me next to him though and that seems to make her happy.
