Hello everyone!!
Today is sunny and bright, and our deck has plenty of shade, and a brand new grill. We have strawberries in the refrigerator, and ice cream in the freezer. It is definitely getting to be summer here, bit by bit.
So the big thing of our summer – Wyatt’s surgery. Wyatt is having double hip surgery July 9, along with tendon lengthening at the same time. I can feel it hovering over us, as I try to make this June as fun as I can for him. The recovery for it is supposed to be very intense, and he will need to be basically in bed for a month, with a wedge between his legs 24/7. I am extremely nervous about next month, but I keep telling myself what the surgeon told me, that this is short term pain for long term gain. I am just going to have to grit my teeth and push through, and help my son get through this time as easily as I can.
We are trying to pack as much as we can into June for him. I had him make a bucket list for the summer, with a few things we can do during recovery, like ice cream for dinner, but most of them are things we need to do either this month or the end of August. He wants to go see the movie How to Train Your Dragon, have a car picnic, where we drive somewhere and then have a picnic in the back of the Subaru, ride the train at Greenfield Village again (hopefully without barfing this time!), and see the dragon exhibit at the zoo. He has a few others on there too, which I am hoping we can accomplish!
We also have his yearly EEG this week. On Wednesday we head up to the hospital for 24-48 hours, where he will be all hooked up with wires. I am packing his tablet and books and drawing supplies, and hoping we get the go ahead to leave on Thursday morning. I am also taking a book and my headphones for myself, for when he goes to bed that night. TV in the hospital is always the worst! Lol.
This month is RicStar Music Camp too! A million thank yous to Jeanie at Marmalade Gypsy who told me to look into this camp for Wyatt, it has been a blessing and we can’t wait to go back this year. We are starting to feel like we are part of the RicStar family now, as this will be our third year in attendance. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again! I am hoping to get to the Children’s Garden this year after camp lets out for the day. I have said that for two years now, so fingers crossed!
And then we have a birthday party for a friend and fellow scout of Wyatt’s, and our beginning of summer Scout party, where the kids will be able to play and enjoy some pizza and ice cream and I will award them their pins that they earned this year. They have all done so well and I am so happy with how Scouts has turned out for all the kids. They are a little community now and that is what I wanted, for the kids and parents to have fun in scouts together, and to form relationships. I have made new friends and so has Wyatt, and the other mothers and kids are hanging out as well, and it just makes my heart so full. It is everything I hoped for when forming this pack. We have a few other things on the calendar as well, like getting together with my brother Devin and Chrissy and Mermaid Girl and Hurricane whenever we can. I am trying to pack it all in guys!
I have also been planning like a maniac. I have the first four months of our history curriculum planned, and one read aloud for history so far. I am in the process of choosing our language arts books, and think I have a rough list to work from. I am thinking: Secret of the Andes, Bud Not Buddy, Because of Winn Dixie and either Call it Courage or Heart of a Samurai. I would love to hear thoughts on these choices! I have a whole other list for history, but I am solid on two right now, By the Great Horn Spoon, and Rascal. I also want one for the Oregon Trail and one about Harriet Tubman or the Underground Railroad, so any suggestion would be welcomed!
I have also planned out the entire next year for scouts, or at least what we are doing each month. It’s going to be a fun year!
This month is going to be a whirlwind, and I hopefully have lots of iced lattes in my future to keep me going!
And that is where I am at today. How are you?
I hope that whatever you do today, you do something that makes you smile!
How exciting to have the deck done and a new grill! We bought a Blackstone Griddle two years ago, and I am afraid of it. Mike can’t grill on it so we are giving it to our son. Then, I’m going to buy a grill because I miss that.
I cannot begin to imagine the way you are feeling. I know how I felt when my kids had surgeries, and they were minor. But, your heart feels a million different ways. I will keep all of you (and the doctors and nurses) in my prayers.
One book I would recommend is Dear Austin. It’s about the Underground Railroad and is written in letter form. There’s another book called Dear Levi which is about western expansion. The two are brothers, but, unfortunately, the letters from one are not answered in the other. There is a picture book about Henry “Box” Brown which is also so good. I wish I could remember all the books we used when we taught about the Civil War. Are there any homes near you that were stations on the Underground Railroad? You’d be surprised how many there are. If you could find one, you might fit that in before his surgery, though I’m not sure how! I’m checking with my friend to see what other books she might include, and I’ll let you know!

Oh my gosh that is what Billy bought – a Blackstone. He is in the cult now. My brother got one and told Billy he was making pancakes and fried rice and all kinds of stuff on it. I told Billy he is now in charge of dinner for the summer…
I am freaking out, 100%. I am just so scared of the surgery, of the recovery.. but I am trying to remind myself that so many kids with CP get this surgery and they make it through to the other side, so I am going to focus on the other side. Or try to.
Thank you for the book ideas!! And we have a church in Detroit that was part of the underground railroad. I am hoping to get there with Wyatt when we get to the Civil War/pre-civil war years. I think that should be around December/Januaryish. And thanks Marsha!!

It sounds like you have some fabulous summer bucket list plans; I hope the surgery recovery goes well. It’s so hard to see our kids suffering– even knowing it’s short term pain for long term gain! I do have some underground railroad/books suggestion. We enjoyed these 3: Freedom’s a-calling me by Ntozake Shange, Minty; A story of Young Harriet Tubman by Alan Schroeder, and Sojourner’s Step- Stomp Stride by Pinkney.

Thanks Joanne. I think part of it is that I have had so long to think about it!! Too much time for imagining scenarios. 😦
Thank you! I will look all of those up!!

I was worried he might not be able to make it to camp because of the surgery date (I don’t know camp dates!) but then I realized surgery was JULY, not June. Your June is packed with lots of fun stuff. I’d like to do all of them! (I just loved “Rascal” — I still remember it!) If you think you can get to the children’s garden, let me know and maybe we can meet there!

It worked out that he could go but I was going to delay it if I had to. Lol. The surgeon said it was a slow moving thing, and didn’t need to be done immediately, so that was going to be my request.
I am glad to hear that about Rascal! It sounded good and I thought it was set in an interesting period of time as well!
And I will! That would be fun!

Car picnics are the best! Mr. and I started officially dating the end of 2019, and we all know what happened in 2020 … “dates” turned into car picnics {in his Subaru, haha}! And honestly, we loved them so much that we still have them periodically 🙂
Sounds like a fun-busy June ahead of y’all, and I love the bucket list idea. Ice cream for dinner is probably one y’all should do several times 😉
Thoughts and prayers heading your way tomorrow and Thursday ❤

Lol!! Coincidentally, that is when we started them too! We all just needed to get out! And Subarus have great space for it. LOLOL. I love that you guys still have them!
I agree – we should probably do ice cream for dinner a few times this summer. 🙂
Thank you Rebecca.

Thank you Cat! We are going to Dream Night at the Zoo tonight. It is just for special needs children and they are going to have a few special things happening just for them. And then we can check visit the dragon exhibit at the zoo off of his list!

Girl, you know I am tired just thinking of this June line up. Lol. I am planning in a week of nothing the week before his surgery though.
I am so happy about the Scouts. That was such an ordeal to set up (you remember) but it was worth it.
