Hello everyone!! Last week we spent time with Billy’s aunt who is in from out of town. She lives in NC and the last time that she saw Wyatt he was a teeny tiny baby! It was really good to see her and we need to make sure it is not another ten years before we see her again.
Read Last Week:

Last week, I read Berries & Bones by James Stephans and Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina; I also finished listening to The Pumpkin Spice Cafe.
I absolutely loved Sisters of the Lost Nation and could not put it down. I was sucked in immediately, and Billy stopped me once from flipping to the back to read the ending. It was excellent. It was part horror, but horror based upon Indigenous lore, and also mystery/thriller. It also highlights the crisis surrounding missing and murdered Indigenous people.
Berries & Bones was …different? I both loved it and thought it was weird. Old Bear and his cozy den was described so perfectly and I wanted to move in with him and drink his tea and eat his pies. However he goes on a mushroom hunt one late fall afternoon and all sorts of things befall him, and the story starts to feel like a fairy tale quest, complete with otherworldly creatures. And, it ends on a cliffhanger!
I finally finished listening to The Pumpkin Spice Cafe. I enjoyed it, it was very cute and fluffy and had big time fall vibes, but I also felt like the MMC’s (male main characters) issues that were the wedge that could potentially keep the two apart sort of dragged out too long. I was rolling my eyes at him near the end of the book, like come on dude get over it. As far as spice, there was definitely some spice, not closed door. It is hard for me to rank romance since I don’t read too much of it, but I would say I enjoyed Haunted Ever After more.
Reading This Week:

I am in love with the cover of A Dark and Secret Magic. It just looks so fall! Like perfectly fall.
Listening:

Wyatt is learning about dinosaurs in science right now, and it has been a big reminder that I have not actually thought too much about them beyond the Jurassic Park movies since I was in 3rd/4th grade. I thought this book sounded really interesting and I am looking forward to starting my listen.

Weekend Getaway Part 1 – Bookstores and Bakeries
Weekend Getaway Part 2 – All Aboard and An Art Museum
Comfy Cozy Cinema – Blithe Spirit
Watching:
Billy and I are watching the television show What We Do in the Shadows which is hysterical. We are also watching The Pottery Throw Down most nights, which is also amazing in a much different way.
As for movies, we are halfwayish through our Comfy Cozy Cinema lineup that we buddy watch with Lisa from Boondock Ramblings. Our movie last week was Blithe Spirit, which elicited some interesting responses. Our movie this week is Rear Window, and I am super excited to watch it tonight. It is supposed to be a rainy day and night and I think it will be the perfect movie to watch. Deb from Readerbuzz and Cat from Catwire are watching along with us some weeks and it has been a lot of fun! If you want, watch and post along with us! Or just watch along and comment with us on our posts. We are considering a watch party in November for Chocolat, where we will all tune in at home at the same time and chat during the movie on Discord.
Speaking of Comfy Cozy Cinema, there are only a few days left to enter our Comfy Cozy Care Package giveaway! We are giving away a package that contains tea, chocolate, a cute fall mug, stickers, a soft cozy blanket, a signed copy of Lisa’s 1st Gladwynn Grant book, a copy of a fall poetry anthology that I put together, two journals, as well as a few little surprises! You can enter here!
And that is it for me this rainy morning! Stay safe everyone, and try to do something that makes you smile today!
The Pumpkin Spice Cafe looks cute. I understand about drawn out drama but love the cozy fall vibe of the cover.
Love the cover of the Dinosaur book. I need to look that one up.
Have a great week, Erin! Happy Reading!

It was probably a 3ish star read, so not too bad. It had fantastic fall vibes!
I am about to start my dinosaur book. I think it will be interesting!

I hope the aunt is from the mid to eastern part of NC rather than the hurricane part of NC. I live in the middle in Raleigh and we weren’t affected other than some rain. My brother lives in Tampa and had power outages but otherwise ok.

I love dinosaurs! Look up Mary Anning, though she might be the woman on the front of your book.

Oh yes! I have heard of her! I don’t know much but I know a tiny bit. Our curriculum actually has a book study for Wyatt, maybe next month, that is about her.

Yay for seeing family you haven’t seen in years! My son LOVED dinosaurs and can still recall many things he has learned about them over the years. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

I am really excited to start actual dinosaurs with him. Lol. We have been wading through all this precambrian etc stuff and somehow prehistoric blobs and fish are not as interesting. Lol. I tried to take him to see the dunkel-fish skeleton thing at the Natural History Museum in Cleveland but we didn’t make it there on our trip. I think that would have helped.

That dino book sounds good. Must’ve shocked the heck out of the Victorians finding those fossils. Especially if they didn’t know if some of the dinos might still be lurking in the woods somewhere. I often try to imagine what if we lived at the same time as dinos and had to constantly be hiding from them.

I know, can you imagine finding something like that and not really having a frame of reference? I imagine that too sometimes, especially if we watch Jurassic Park. It would certainly make life a bit different! Lol.

I’m still reading The Pumpkin Spice Cafe. I’ll be sure to give a bit of patience for poor Logan and his inability to get over embarrassment.

I just finished The Guncle Abroad and loved it. I hope he writes more of these, but I kinda think this may be the last one. I just started Sandwich. I think you’ve read that? We finished The Umbrella Academy and started It Ends with Us. I read that book and really didn’t care one way or the other about it. But, I wanted to see what the movie would be like. It’s one of those that it really doesn’t matter if Mike watches or not! I’m also watching RuPaul’s Global All-Stars once he’s asleep as well as the Halloween Baking Championship!
I hope you have a glorious week. It’s going to be chilly here this week, and I’m all for it!

I have not read Sandwich! I want to read it but I know it will be super emotional and I only read one super emotional book a year. LOLOL. Not really. I will probably end up reading it next summer. I will be looking forward to your thoughts on it!
Ooo what is the Halloween Baking Championship?
Here too, and I am so excited!!

I read a mystery that touched on missing Indigenous people. I remember the authors note being interesting. Very sad. I will check out Sisters of the Lost Nation. I also want to check out the Cozy Cinema! Rear Window is so good! Such a classic. I might have to join!

My birthday is coming up in November so I added the Pumpkin Spice Cafe to our my wishlist. I enjoyed Gilmore Girls so much when I discovered it a few years ago.
We are planning to watch Rear Window this week while we are up in East Texas. The Internet is good here at the log cabin where we are staying so fingers crossed.

She was thankfully in an area that was not affected by the hurricane, although we were watching the radars like crazy when it was hitting! I have started listening to it and it is pretty interesting!

Berries & Bones sound fun! It sounds like Old Bear got high on mushrooms and then all those weird adventures and otherworldly creatures turned up! If that’s what it is, I absolutely must read it! 😂

Oh my gosh that would be awesome! Hmmmm.. now I am wondering if the scent of the mushrooms he was tracking really did make him high and that is why all this happened! he followed the scent of these really elusive mushrooms that cause whoever smells them to have very vivid memories and thoughts. Lol! Now I need to go back and reread it with that in mind. It is a really quick, fast read.

There’s a Veronica Speedwell mystery by Deanna Raybourn that involves dinner in some kind of dinosaur. I thought it sounded absolutely bonkers so was shocked when I saw it had actually happened! You’ve got some fantastic fallish books going and how nice to have a visit with family. I hope you’re having a great week!
