Friday Morning Coffee Catch Up

Hello everyone! My coffee today is darn good, I am going to be honest.

First off, I hope everyone in the path of this hurricane is safe. Helene is looking pretty wicked. My brother and family head to Disney tomorrow, and I am also worried about that! I am keeping all involved in my prayers this weekend.

Update: I wanted to add that I am so shocked and sad over the passing of Dame Maggie Smith. We watch so many of her movies in this house, both as part of Comfy Cozy Cinema, and just in our regular watching. Maggie Smith could say volumes in a glance, and cut to the bone with her dry wit. Her performances always had me giggling, but she also could tug the heartstrings and convey compassion as well. Her performances were always masterful and I am grateful that she left behind such a large and plentiful portfolio of movies for us to watch and enjoy. May she rest in peace.

Looking back at our past week or so, it was pretty..sedate. Wyatt and I were either sick or recovering from our cold, and while they were mild (just congestion) we didn’t feel like doing much. We pretty much just read and did some schoolwork and Wyatt played. I think our bodies needed a little break.

During the week though Billy and I noticed that our female Betta has shredded fins. It made us super nervous that maybe she had fin rot and we couldn’t figure out why. So we scooped out some of her water and took it up to the fish store for a test and to talk to the owner. Our water tested perfectly, and she doesn’t live with any other fish that would chew on her, so it was a bit of a mystery. The woman who works there finally determined that since she was in a community tank of other female bettas when we bought her, that she came to us a little chewed up and then developed an infection from her wounds. We bought some blue stuff to treat her – we drop a little in the water every night before bed and that should clear up her infection within seven days, hopefully. For a fish she has a pretty cute personality. I can even get her to jump up for food. It is super cute. She is loved so we hope she recovers. The guy said since she is eating and still zooming around her tank that she should be ok.

However, Sunny the snail lives with her normally, and the fish store told us we might want to take him out during the treatment. So we set up a small bowl for him to live in temporarily, and the first night in, he showed us how much he didn’t care for it. I woke up the next morning, and he was missing! I looked around and around near the bowl, and found him halfway across the room, laying there like a man in a desert! Billy hurriedly scooped him up and put him back in the water. Sunny is an aquatic snail so he shouldn’t be out of water. We are mystified as to how he got that far – and where was he going? And how long could that have taken? My friend suggested that he saw the other aquarium across the room and was trying to make it there, which made me giggle to think about – but, maybe? It’s a mystery!

We also decorated for fall and Halloween, to boost our spirits. I am loving all of our decorations, it makes it feel so warm and cozy in here, all the fall leaves and burnt orange, the pumpkins and ghosts. It made us happy! We also stopped in at Trader Joes after Wyatt’s epilepsy appointment the other day, and bought up most of their seasonal line. We may have gone a little crazy! It is easy to do there though! I also bought two items to include in the comfy cozy care package that Lisa from Boondock Ramblings and I will be hosting a giveaway for very soon.

Billy is adding some flourishes to Wyatt’s ramp, to make things more comfortable for him to play out there. He just has the railings and then it will be completely finished!

And here are just a few random photos from the roll!

And that is it from me today! I hope that whatever you do, you do something that makes you smile.

Aw, I hope you and your son (and your fish!) are feeling 100% real soon. Sometimes a quiet week at home is needed with lots of rest and downtime. I wonder where your snail was going and what the thought process was there…. that must have felt so weird having to search all over for it!

    1. Thank you Joanne! Wyatt and I are over the ick, thank goodness. I think that is exactly what we needed!

It was so weird! I was like “where in the world did he disappear to?” And then seeing him just laying there like that lol. It was so dramatic somehow. Lol.

  2. Sounds like a lovely sedate week 🙂

We once had a crawfish get out of a tank, fall down below the stand it was on, and start scittering across the rug … covered in dust bunnies. It looked like a very strange rat, LOL

Here in North Carolina, we’ve gotten a lot of rain and wind from Helene – thankfully not the worst of it (that went further west, and canceled our anniversary trip to the mountains! 😲), and my family in Florida also came through with no damage/just power losses. Whew. ❤️

    1. Oh my gosh!!!!! That would have totally freaked me out at first. LOL. Where do these critters think they are going?

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear your trip was canceled! That stinks! Hopefully you can reschedule soon. I am glad that you and your family though all came through unscathed.

  3. Lovely and cheery post (apart from poor Mr Snail, but he’s OK, right?). I’m a bit fed up as I tested strong positive still for Covid yesterday on the equivalent day to when Matthew tested negative so I’m still isolating and missing even more things (consitutuency party meeting last night, parkrun, helping my friend who uses a wheelchair get to our booky meetup and a book event tomorrow). At least other friends have pulled through to help with the chair so that might be a positive. I’ve done a lot of reading, but we have a holiday coming up when I was going to do a lot of reading so now am I going to be bored on that??!

    1. He survived! He is good. 🙂

Oh no!!! That stinks! Are you still feeling bad or are you now just asymptomatic and testing positive? I hate missing stuff too – that is one thing I was really upset about when we were sick. We missed my one niece’s birthday party, therapy, and I missed going to a work party with Billy. 😦 I’m glad at least your friend had some help.

Is there anything else you could do to pass the time? Do you embroider or sew or knit? It is so tough to isolate. Do you have all your plans for your trip? Could you look up restaurants, etc and make a list of things to do? I am such a nerd, lists make me feel better. I hope you test negative soon!

      1. I used to do cross stitch but I don’t think I could see it properly any more, plus I am still symptomatic and have to stop to sneeze a lot! All my other hobbies are outdoors which I obviously need to redress! The photography of course, but I just took random snaps of duvets for my photo a day project!! Anyway I tested negative this morning so have been OUT to collect some books from the bookshop and get some more cough sweets, now having to rest for the rest of the day …

  4. When my kids were growing up we had 2-55 gallon fish tanks in the living room and the 3 kids had a 10 gallon in their bedrooms. My MIL loved to fish and one day she brought me a fish she had caught in the river. At first it wouldn’t eat and about and then my husband said to stick my finger into water and then into the fish food. He said the fish might think it looked like a worm and eat it. I tried it and it worked so twice a day every day I had to feed the other fish and then stand there with fish food stuck to my finger until she was full.

  5. I love your Fall/Halloween decorations! I need to get mine up. You’re right – it makes things feel all cozy inside (even if we’re still having 100+ degree weather so it feels anything but Autumnal outside).

Your cross stitch is super cute! I love to stitch also, but I’ve got tendonitis/arthritis in my right hand that makes it too painful to stitch for too long at a time.

You and Wyatt should write a book about the escaping snail! And, Billy could illustrate it. That’s so funny it would make it that far and survive! I finally decorated the little bit I’m probably going to do for fall. I’ll get some ghosts out once October hits…oh, wait…that’s next week! I guess I’ll get the ghosts out next week. Most of my pumpkins are in the attic, and no one is around to catch the crates when I drop them. I’m going to have to seriously rethink this attic thing!

    1. Lol that would be fun!! I can’t believe that snail did that. If only you could have seen how dramatic it looked lying there on the carpet.

It’s October! Are your ghosts out? Oh and I hope you are able to get your pumpkins out! We made ghosts the other day as a family project and they look so cute!

  8. We’ve been struggling a bit here with headaches and stomach aches. Not sure if it’s the ick or just some fun from the pressure changes from Helene. I hope your brother’s Disney trip is okay. It sounds like most of it stayed on the Gulf side but it can still not be fun. Oh no on the fish/snail saga! I hope the fish gets to feeling better and the snail stops trying to hurl himself in her direction.

    1. Ugh! I hope you all feel better soon! I wondered how you guys fared from the hurricane. You were out of the direct path right?

My brother is having a great time although they said it is insanely humid and hot. Lol. They landed in Tampa though to visit my SIL’s aunt first. My brother told me there was so much destruction and houses knocked down and trees everywhere. My SIL’s aunt’s house was fine thank goodness. I guess she is away from the water and up on a bit of a hill.

That snail thing was crazy! Our fish is hopefully better. It’s hard to tell but she is swimming and eating. We plopped the snail back in, so he is happy now too. Lol.
