Hello everyone! Another week, and here we are in July already! We are off to a rainy start this July and that is ok, Michigan needs it. We also were dodging extremely unhealthy air quality last week and spent so much time inside. We were among the worst in the world for air quality – it blows my mind that a fire 500 miles from us could have effects here but it shows how small the world really is sometimes.

Read Last Week:

We read more Wyatt books than mine last week, since we were trapped inside. I did manage to read one, and started listening to another.

I have been waiting and waiting for The House on Prytania to come in for me at the library and let me tell you, when I got the email, I headed directly there and did not pass go. It was so good, y’all~ I love Nola and Beau, but the other characters are just as interesting and fun to read. Jolene in particular is a hoot!

I also started listening to The Living Great Lakes on Libby, and I am really enjoying it! I mean, living in the Great Lakes state it is of particular interest to me, and I am learning so much about the lakes as I listen.

Reading This Week:

I am so excited to read this! I bought it all the way back in January but have held onto it until summer, because I am a nerd and since the book takes place in the summer, I wanted to read it in the summer. It sounds so good!

Watching/Listening:

In TV land, Billy and I got sucked into the world of School Spirits. We were expecting something a bit cheesier or just not as well done as it is, for what it is. It is so good! And now we are out of episodes which is a huge bummer. I love Simon and Wally, such good characters!

We also have been filling in here and there with Death in Paradise, and we are on the Humphrey episodes. We had just watched Beyond Paradise in the spring, which is about Humphrey who is back in England after his stint on the islands so it was neat to go back and rewatch his origins again.

This week we also start our shark month movie marathon! Well, I guess not really marathon since we are spreading them out over a few weeks, but still..lots of shark movies beginning with Jaws on Tuesday!

In my YouTube world, I have been watching a lot of With Love, Kristina, and Alexis Dahl. With Love, Kristina does a lot of vintage (mostly vintage) videos but also declutter videos which are my weakness. They are so relaxing, just to watch things go from super cluttery to all nice and organized. Sigh. Alexis Dahl is a Michigander whose videos are all about science and history and they are awesome! I loved her most recent video about Henry Ford’s “utopian” towns in the U.P. It was so fascinating!

I already mentioned that I am listening to the audiobook of The Living Great Lakes by Jerry Dennis, which is fantastic. I have also been listening to the podcast Sinisterhood, which is true crime/horror but the two hosts Christina and Heather are hysterical and I actually laugh out loud at some of their comments. So far I have really enjoyed their episodes The Stanley Hotel and The Nain Rouge, which is a total Detroit thing!

I am glad you are getting some rain. Hopefully it will help clear the air some. I hope the fire season here in California will not be too terrible this year. There have already been several that have started in my county, but luckily they have been relatively small so far.

I love Karen White’s writing and need to dive back into her books as it’s been awhile since I last picked one up. I am glad you enjoyed The House on Prytania. It sounds good! I hope you enjoy The Cloisters!

I hope you have a great week, Erin!

  2. I’ve enjoyed your posts about home schooling. It’s funny you get Death in Paradise, I suppose it’s a big thing worldwide, we don’t watch it but it always seems to be on here in one series or another! I’ve had a good week because my running rehab is going well and I’ve hit 5k (3.1 miles) twice in a row, which feels brilliant. Have a good week!

    1. Wow that is fantastic!! Great job on the running!!! I always think I want to run – maybe this fall I will give it a whirl, very very slowly.

We pay for a service called BritBox which has a bunch of British shows; we watch so many! Lol.

      1. Have a look for a Couch to 5k app, I’m sure you have them there, they guide people through it really nicely. Don’t worry if you can’t do 5k in 30 minutes by the end, though, so many people need more time than that – I’ve run multiple marathons and I can’t do 5k in 30 mins!

And that’s so funny, but I suppose we watch American stuff!

  3. We need rain. We are hoping for rain on Fourth of July. Rain that day might put a crimp in all the loud fireworks that evening.

The Living Great Lakes sounds fascinating. Our book group read Gulf a few years ago, and I took away so much from that book about the body of water so close to us.

    1. It sure has here! It was storming off and on last night, and everyone was in – no fireworks.

I am loving The Living Great Lakes. Like you and the Gulf, the lakes are just such a part of our life here and it is so interesting to learn more about them. My family were shipbuilders in Detroit when they immigrated here from England and Scotland and my great-Uncle was the foreman for the Edmund Fitzgerald. We live right on the Detroit River that feeds into Lake Erie, which is about ten miles away. We are wrapped up in water here!

    1. Yes!! It has been so crazy! The Ambassador Bridge to Canada could barely be seen the other day – glad I wasn’t on it at that time! Just so hazy smoky.

It is really good so far! It definitely makes me think of northern Michigan vacations.

    1. Yes! It is making me crazy! We had a break in the rain yesterday for a minute and I was able to run out and do a little maintenance on the garden but not enough. Hopefully tomorrow I can really get out there. We are celebrating the 4th today and tomorrow is a lazy at home day. 🙂

  4. I’ve been wanting to read Karen White’s books for such a long time. I really need to make time for them. The Cloisters looks really good. I hope you have a great week and enjoy your books!

We have had rain here, too! It was so nice to hear it as well as the thunder. The best ones were a little late so I didn’t go out to watch them.

I don’t listen to audio books because I eventually stop paying attention…I really, really don’t like to be read to! I’m currently reading something like A World of Curiosities by Louise Penny and really like it.

We started the next season of The Witcher, but I’m just not into this time around. I think it’s because so much time has passed since the last season so I’ve forgotten lots of the story line.

    Have a fabulous week!

    1. Yes!! I am glad you got rain! I enjoyed hearing the rain as well. Wyatt loves the thunder and always says “Whoa Mom!” after a big clap. Lol.

I had that problem for years and years with audiobooks! I can only listen to certain nonfiction I have noticed. Lol. Fiction very rarely, but I listen to podcasts so I think that is why I can do a nonfiction audiobook. Lol. I’ve wanted to read Louise Penny for so long. This is going to be the year, maybe!

I love The Witcher (sigh, Henry Caville) but we haven’t started the new one. I can barely remember the last season either!

  6. I think I’ll get a copy of The Living Great Lakes. We went boating on Lake Erie when I was a kid and my brother in law’s family own a cabin on Lake Michigan.

  7. I just watched Jaws for the first time a year or two ago. I really enjoyed it but I did find the level of adult supervision the kids were getting hilarious. I can’t imagine how challenging the air quality is in Michigan. I’ve been really struggling with my asthma the last few weeks and I’m much farther south. Enjoy your reading and I hope you’re having a great week!
