We had a basic week this week. Work for Billy, school for Wyatt and I, hanging out with my mom, chilling at home. I am hoping to find something for us to do today after Billy fixes our front porch step, which broke last night. We also got the good news from Wyatt’s therapist that insurance will pay for both his walker and a wheelchair, which is fantastic since Wyatt is not able to just walk everywhere right now. His stamina and endurance and ability right now allows him to walk short distances only, and I am so proud of him for it and all of his hard work, but we also need something for the other times. Kiddo is growing like crazy, 45 pounds and 42 inches and as a woman who is 5 feet tall it can be a challenge to figure out how to get us both around without any assistive devices. A wheelchair will be a welcome addition to the family, as it will be a form of freedom and independence. And phew I went on about that a bit more than I intended!

Read Last Week:

I just couldn’t read the book I had planned for last week, I am an Executioner. It was creepy and weird and clever and I am pretty sure had I not just read Our Crooked Hearts I could have finished it, but I am full up on creepy, weird, and clever for the moment. I picked up How to be a Good Creature instead, which I got for Christmas, and well, it was absolutely perfect. If you read here, you know I am a huge animal lover and always have been. I loved reading about Montgomery’s journey through her life and the animals that most changed her and how, what their stories were. I have had The Soul of an Octopus on my TBR for a while and I will probably be reading it sooner than later now that Montgomery is firmly on my radar. I just loved this book.

Reading This Week:

I started this last night and so far I am really enjoying it!

Reading With Wyatt:

We started a new chapter book read aloud and Wyatt is enamored. I have never read it before either, so it is new to me, and it is super cute so far. Wyatt wanted me to keep reading and reading it – I had to finally call it a night and tell him it was time for bed!

Watching/Listening

Oof. So this list is long this week! We finished Shetland – so good! And what the heck!! That ending I can’t take it!

We are also still watching Around the World in 80 Days and All Creatures Great and Small. We are not used to watching shows weekly anymore, and it is weird to have to wait. And we are watching the Winter Olympics when we get a chance. I am a Winter Olympics fan, more than Summer Olympics, and I was so excited about them starting! I was rambling off to Billy all the events I like – figure skating, skeleton, bobsled, alpine skiing, moguls, biathlon, ski jumping, snowboarding, and the luge – and he just cracked up and said that was the most sporting events he had ever heard me say. We are also occasionally watching Kim’s Convenience and Steel Magnolias.

Our Saturday night movie was Kiki’s Delivery Service, another Studio Ghibli. Billy and I are taking turns picking what we watch. I apparently go for the more cutesy ones while he chose one that was a little less cutesy. I have a feeling the next one we watch will be Nausicaa, as it is Billy’s choice. So far we have watched The Secret World of Arrietty, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Kiki’s Delivery Service, which was adorable. I also learned that Studio Ghibli was formed by the same people who did The Last Unicorn movie, which is an all time favorite of mine, so maybe I will sneak that one in one Saturday.

As for our wake up songs this week, it was a mixed bag as always. Ho-Hey by The Lumineers, We Didn’t Start the Fire by Billy Joel (and somehow my brain still remembered all the lyrics), Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, White Rabbit by Jefferson Starship, and California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and the Papas.

Wyatt has been watching Let’s Go Luna lately, and it is so cute!

  2. That’s great news about Wyatt and the insuranc e. And Shetland! It’s been a few years since I’ve watched that show. How many seasons are there now? I should go bac and catch up.

    I’ve been watching the Olympics a lot too- especially the alpine skiing events. I could watch Olympics all the time lolol.

    1. Thanks Bryan! For some reason I get sort of nervous talking about it to people outside of my close friends and family. So thank you for making me feel more comfortable about it. 🙂 It is a huge load off of my mind and I am beyond excited. It is going to reopen the world to us as we are so limited right now in where we can go and what we can do, besides the obvious pandemic limitations. I can’t even send him for speech and occupational therapy right now because of it so I am very excited to be able to resume them. ☺️

  4. I’m so glad to hear that insurance will pay for the walker and the wheelchair! That’s fabulous news.

    We are not used to waiting a week to see the next episode of a series. And how can that be? That’s exactly the way tv was for most of my life. But I’ve gotten used to streaming as much as I like of a series.

    It always surprised me how much young kids like stories featuring animals, maybe even more than when they have human characters. I wonder if that’s true of all kids or just the kids at my primary school.

    1. Isn’t that crazy about not being used to waiting for shows anymore? Lol.

      And Wyatt for sure responds more to animal stories than stories with people. He was so-so on Narnia so we didn’t keep reading. I think we will go back to it when he is older but for now we are sticking to what he likes.

  5. Oh, what a relief that must be that your insurance will cover a walker and wheelchair for Wyatt! I’m sure he will be just as happy to have both of those as you are. (And you certainly didn’t go on and on too long about this topic. It’s a huge part of your daily life and this is your blog, after all.)

    I love the cover art for How to Be a Good Creature. I read The Soul of an Octopus a few years ago with my book group (it’s outstanding!) and need to get a copy of this memoir. Appleblossom the Possum looks like a darling book. Cute that Wyatt doesn’t want you to stop reading it at bedtime.

    Shetland is so good, but the last season fell short for me. I didn’t care for the ending, either. We’ve been watching more of MI-5 and Hope Street. We tried an episode of The Gilded Age and aren’t sure if we’ll continue.

    Hey-Ho and California Dreamin’ are two of my all-time favorite songs!

    1. Thank you Lesley! I never want it to sound like I am complaining. 🙂 We are so relieved that we can get both!

      I really need to read The Soul of an Octopus. How to be a Good Creature briefly touches on Montgomery’s octopi friends and now I am looking forward to reading it. And Wyatt loves Appleblossom the Possum! Way more than I expected. I thought he would like it but he is hooked. Lol.

      And I agree!! I felt like I kept waiting for the mystery to begin on Shetland and then boom it was over. Which was weird. I don’t know why I felt that way. And then the ending really bothered me! They better fix that situation fast! I am interested in your thoughts on The Gilded Age!

    That is great news about the wheelchair and walker being covered by insurance. What a relief that must be! I am glad you are enjoying Arsenic and Adobo. I enjoyed it too and am looking forward to the second book in the series. Kiki’s Delivery Service was cute, wasn’t it? We enjoyed it as well. I hope you have a great week!

  10. I am new to your blog, but I love reading about your little guy! I’m so glad you are getting assistance with a wheelchair. I’m sure he will find it so liberating! I’ve not read any of these books, but I’ll have to check them out. Oh, I do love read alouds. I taught special education for the first half of my teaching career and fourth grade for the remainder. I loved reading to my students!

  12. We really need to try Kiki’s Delivery Service. I think my son would absolutely love it. We bought a little black cat not realizing where it was from last time we were in Disney World and it’s his favorite and with everything I’ve read about the show I think he would love it.
    That’s great about the wheelchair and walker! That will make everything so much easier. When Will’s mobility really dropped we fought against a wheelchair but ended up being such a valuable tool. Even though we don’t use it regularly anymore there are times that it has been so necessary. Have a wonderful week!

    1. It was really so cute!! And aw how cute a little black Jiji stuffed animal! So far we are really liking all the Studio Ghibli movies. I am surprised at how different they all are!

      And thanks Katherine! We have reached the time when we do need to use it despite what my heart wants. 🙂 It will just be so much better and Wyatt’s world will become so much bigger.

  13. Yay for getting a wheelchair and walker for your little guy! It is something to be excited about because as you say, it will give you the freedom to move around everywhere as a family.
    I love animals and nature too, and that book, How to be a Good Creature, has the most adorable cover. Enjoy your week.

    1. Thank you! We are super excited!! I am already planning different places and activities where we can use them.

      How to be a Good Creature was so good! And the cover is completely adorable. The artist also has illustrations throughout the book as well.
