It’s snowing!! Not hard, and not fast, but definitely snowing. In our house, this means Chinese takeout for dinner. It’s just a little tradition that we have, the first sign of flakes means that we order Chinese food.

I feel a Gilmore Girls rewatch coming on.

We had a different sort of week. Wyatt got a vaccine on Wednesday and I never know how to plan around those, in case of any reactions. I guess it is leftover from when he was a baby. So I planned a lighter week and then when he was completely fine, used that time to catch up on housework. It was getting a bit cluttered up in here. I also met up with my friends for a wine night at my friend Kelly’s house – it was a much needed time with them, it’s been a few weeks and it was really good to catch up. Then Saturday I dragged my mom to Target for her first trip to a store in two years. Once we got there, bright and early before most of the world was awake, we had a great time shopping together. We picked up a few presents, some necessary items, and just some weird fun things too. Saturday night my brother and SIL, Billy and I, dropped our kids off at our mom’s house and then the four of us headed back to my brother’s for pierogi takeout and some time to chat without the kids. It was short but fun – it has been way too long since just the four of us have hung out like that.

Read Last Week:

Nothing. Nada. I started The Wild Silence but I am not in the right place to read it right now. It is way too emotional and sad for me – we have recently had some events around here that have been tough, and I need to read to escape. I will come back to this book at a later date.

Reading This Week:

Since I am having such issues lately settling on a book, I decided to pick up a book of poetry, and Wendell Berry is such a wonderful writer. I am looking forward to enjoying his words this week.

Watching and Listening:

Billy and I have been watching The Great British Bake Off. It is so good this season! I mean I always love it but I love all the contestants this time around. We also started Broken Wood and that is really excellent too.

Wyatt has been waking up the house this week by asking our Echo Dot to play music. We have a few set up around the house that we love to set to play everywhere, so that when we listen to music we can hear it all around us. Anyway, Wyatt has been asking Echo to play a song and “she” randomly chooses one that she thinks we will like. And normally, yes. But at 6:45 am, not always. We have gotten used to it though and have begun to really enjoy it. We have heard Sunny by Bobby Hebb, Happy by Pharrel Williams, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot (which had the anniversary of its wreck the other day), Lord Huron, Jolene by Dolly Parton, and Fire and Rain by James Taylor. Honestly the only one I did not enjoy that early in the morning was Happy. It was a bit too energetic before coffee!

And that is about it for us! What is happening in your world?

  1. The contestants in the Great British Bake Off this season are all fairly good at flavors and baking if not appearance. That makes it difficult to see a contestant be eliminated, I think.

I’ve never read Wendell Barry, though his poetry and his nonfiction and his fiction have all been recommended to me. I’ll enjoy hearing your thoughts.

I’m especially glad that Wyatt’s vaccine went smoothly.

    1. Me too!! I have watched it so many times. I used to identify with Rory; when it came out I was young! Now, I identify with Lorelai. LOL.

My mom was super nervous but once she got there she was having a great time. It’s that initial get yourself out there, especially after being isolated at home for so long!

  2. I’m new to GBBO (only started watching last season) and I’ve become a quick fan. I’m loving this season! Everyone is so good. It’s my Friday night stress reliever.

I love your tradition of getting Chinese take out for the first snow! Maybe I can convince my husband that this has been a longstanding tradition in our house, too.

  3. I started re-watching The Gilmore Girls a couple of weeks ago and it’s as good as it was when it first aired. Love those first snowfalls when everything looks so fresh and sparkly.

I’m glad Wyatt’s vaccination went well. I’m getting my flu shot and my covid booster tomorrow and I’ve left Tuesday and Wednesday completely free in case I need to spend those two days resting in bed. My 2nd covid shot hit me hard (fever, chills, body aches, killer headache, etc.), so I’m prepared for the worst and hoping for the best.

Wendell Berry has been on my TBR list forever, but I’ve never tried any of his books or poetry. I need to do something about that!

I absolutely love Wyatt’s morning wake-up routine with Alexa! I don’t think my husband would enjoy it, though, so maybe I’ll save that music request for when we are doing the dinner dishes. 😉

Have a great week and enjoy your winter weather!

    1. Those are my favorite snowfalls too. And I think I am going to start my GG rewatch today! It’s a cold day and I feel the need for all the comfort.

I read Berry first in college, and have only read a few of his poems. My book arrived yesterday so I am excited to start it today.

LOL! It was a a bit much at first. Especially those happy, peppy songs! I wasn’t ready. I need coffee before music or noise or anything in the morning. My son is a music lover.

  4. We only get a day or two of snow a year and not this early. It is starting to freeze at night once in awhile. I’m glad Wyatt didn’t have any issues with the vaccine and you had some time with friends and family this week. We will get to the Bake Off but right now I am stuck on Love It or List It.

  5. I love hearing about traditions such as first flakes of snow we get Chinese food!

Good story about Wyatt and the early morning music. lol I don’t like that song Happy at any time and definitely not at 6am.

    1. Lol I have no idea how that even started! I think one day years and years ago I was like, yay it’s snowing, let’s celebrate with Chinese food and that was that. 🙂 It’s a fun tradition. 🙂

Yeah, that song is rough. It’s not a favorite of mine either. He loves that one and the Justin Timberlake dance song. Thank goodness that hasn’t played super early in the morning. Yet.

  6. Sounds like a nice and relaxing week and those are the best kind! I saw on Instagram you had snow today. Yesterday it spit snow at us when we went to the store but it was for only about a minute and none of it stuck. Our tradition is to look sad out the window at the first snowfall. I guess that is just mine. The kids run out and stick their tongues out to capture the first snowflakes.

  7. I’ve yet to read Wendell Berry, but recently got one of his novels (Jayber Crow) as a kindle daily deal. Some of his essay collections were $1.99 last week, but I decided to read what was already on my kindle first. Glad you had fun with friends and with you mom at Target.

    1. I have only ever read Berry’s environmentalist pieces. I would love to hear about Jayber Crow!

We did have a great time! I had to push her out the door practically and tell her she was vaxxed and wearing a mask, but we got there and she had a good time. 🙂

  8. So glad you’re enjoying the contestants on GBBO! It’s a favorite of ours but the last few seasons there seemed to be a few people who were either really annoying or were clearly a cut below the others. I love your tradition for the first sign of flakes! We don’t get much snow here but it’s so pretty. Have a great week!

We got our first snow this week too. I’m foreseeing a long winter. I have hit a good stretch in my reading where every book I try has been a keeper. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
