I can’t believe it is almost March. In just a short time, Wyatt will be a big time 6 year old. It’s hard to believe at this time last year, I was getting ready for our little family getaway to Western Michigan, and for his lumberjack themed birthday party. It seems like it was a lifetime away. I am so thankful for that party because a week after we had it our state went into lockdown, and we had at least just spent time with everyone that we love. This year we are just going to celebrate with the three of us, and schedule video chats with the family. I am trying to think of something fun we can do for his birthday too. I’ll think of something. And while we are not going on a little trip right now, I did make reservations for a small trip this summer! I found a campsite through Hipcamp that sounds amazing! It is totally private, only one family at a time, one campsite, located on 30+ acres of vineyard on the west side of Michigan. (Here is the link if you want to check it out!) I have not slept in a tent in a hundred years, and it will be Wyatt’s first time, so I am both excited and slightly nervous. Any advice/tips/tricks for camping with kids is appreciated!

Read Last Week:

I absolutely loved The Tourist Attraction!! It was super cute and the main characters were adorably dorky goofballs. It took longer to read than I had anticipated since I kept leaving my Kindle uncharged. Super frustrating. I am hoping to get a short review post up this week of a few books and this will be on there. As for Braving the Wilderness, I started out strong but have sort of lost interest. I just feel like I get the point of what she is saying at about halfway through the book. It’s good but I probably won’t finish it for a while.

Reading This Week:

I love this series by Armstrong so I am super excited to start it! It’s on my Kindle though, so it will probably take me longer since I am terrible about charging it… And I am finally starting Solitude of Wolverines, which I actually checked out as a physical book from the library. I am looking forward to reading both of these!

Watching and Listening:

We finished up All Creatures Great and Small – and I want more. I think it was fantastic and I absolutely loved how they were able to keep true to the original series as well as the books in the new version of the show. It was excellent. We also started the show Traces on Britbox, and are also watching lots of Hometown, probably because we are in the middle of our own big house refresher right now. Wyatt has been watching Wild Kratts, Molly of Denali, and Sesame Street. This kid loves the Count and Cookie Monster. As for podcasts, I am listening to Morbid, Ologies, Homemaker Chic, and Lore. With Wyatt, we are listening to the Naturalist Kids Podcast, the Molly of Denali podcast, and Earth Rangers. Taylor Swift’s albums Evermore and Folklore are played almost on repeat around here, and when we mix it up we listen to Miranda Lambert (my husband’s favorite..), Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, Lord Huron, and Old Dominion lately.

And that is it from our snug little house today! What have you all been doing?

    Our lockdown 2.0 just got extended another two weeks. I’m okay with that as I’m a homebody if I can’t be travelling or out and about in town.
    I’m thinking of planning a driving trip in the summer but will wait and see how the vaccines go.

    1. It is such an ebb and flow isn’t it? We just came through a long lockdown October-January. Not that we go anywhere anyways lol but our state had the rules. We are doing well right now and hopefully the numbers stay good. I am such a homebody! I can really dig in! My son is starting to get a little stir crazy though I think – much harder for a six year old!! He has cerebral palsy so we are super careful so he hasn’t gone anywhere unless it is outside and masked (except doctors appts) – I am hoping that a solo camping trip in a few months allows him to explore and stimulate his senses a little! 🙂 It is hard to plan for sure for the summer right now. I am hoping that by fall we are all at a good spot with vaccines. 🙂

  2. I hope you’ll find something fun to do on your son’s birthday – I am sure you will! The camping trip sounds great. Personally, I love camping. Not so much living without the normal comforts, but being close to nature and look at beautiful views when opening the tent in the morning is just amazing. Hopefully, the world will get back to more normal conditions over the summer.

    1. I am wracking my brain! Lol. I am super excited about going somewhere new. And it will be so isolated as well lol, so that is good too. I know, fingers crossed that things are better by summer. Right now our state is at 2-3% positive cases which is awesome, and I am hoping hoping hoping that it stays at least at those levels. I am not looking forward to no running water but..it’s only two nights so I am thinking we can hang in there so we can be immersed in nature and the outdoors those two nights. 🙂

  3. A lumberjack-themed birthday party sounds delightful. Our grandson Wyatt will be having his second birthday at the end of March. Like you, I remember attending Wyatt’s birthday last year as the last big bash before lockdown. My daughter-in-law is planning his party completely outdoors and masked, so we are hopeful that we can attend.

    I would love to have a tent and go camping, but my husband insists that he’s too old to sleep on the ground. Sometimes I think about buying one for myself and heading off alone…

    Glad you loved Tourist Attraction. Some books (like possibly the Brene Brown book) make better magazine articles than they do books, I think.

    1. It was so fun! I am so glad we had those memories to sustain us through this long year. And so funny that your Wyatt is also a little March baby too. March in Michigan.. can either be nice weather or super cold. This year, it is looking like it will be cold! I hope you get to go to your Wyatt’s party, that would be fun and so special.

      Lol! They make really good cots/mattresses these days, according to my husband. You can really do it up!I am considering it for myself…

      I really loved everything Brene was saying! But I could see how it might have been better as a magazine article. I really need to listen to her podcast, I think that would be perfect for me. And The Tourist Attraction was so cute. 🙂

    Happy Birthday, Wyatt! I’m glad you had that party last year, as you said. Things will be different this year, but it’s great that we have the technology to bring our loved ones in by video at least.
    I see that you are a homeschooling family. That’s great! We homeschooled our three, who are all grown now.

    1. Thanks! And yes, I am so happy for it this year. We call his grandparents all the time, my mom every night before bed – I can’t imagine what this year would have been like without being able to do that. And we are!! I absolutely love it!!! And that is awesome to hear!

  5. I can hardly believe it is almost March and it’s been a year at home. I loved A Stranger in Town and I just started The Tourist Attraction. We camped a lot when I was a kid. We did fishing, cooked our food in the fire, played cards. It’s harder to keep busy when it rains. Have a lovely week!

    1. I know, it is insane to think about. It has been a hard year for people.

      My son has therapy today and I am not allowed in with COVID rules – I am going to start A Stranger in Town while I wait in the car. I love that series so I am hoping it can hold my attention since I am going to be nervous!

      And good ideas! And thanks for reminding me about rain! I need to have a backup plan since we won’t be going in anywhere to escape from it, except the car! I will have to do some thinking.

  6. I have been in lockdown since last March, with the only changes being staying in the apartment vs. going to the community dining room. The staff kept changing the rules, and we went back and forth about that.

    I haven’t been outside the community since last February…except for a doctor’s appointment in October for bloodwork! Who knew that could be an adventure…LOL.

    Enjoy your camping trip. That sounds awesome.

  7. Hope you guys have an awesome birthday for Wyatt!

    We went tent camping last summer up in Traverse (at the state park) and it was… interesting. 🙂 It rained though so we had some additional issues. Some people really love tent camping- i confess to not being one of them, but we still had a great time. Good luck with yours!!! Hipcamp sounds nice, I’m going to go check it out. We’re deciding what t do this summer and we might tent again…

    1. Thanks!! And I am betting on this being interesting as well. Lol. You are the second person to mention rain and I am so glad that you both did – I need to have a backup plan since we won’t be going in anywhere to escape, except the car. Hipcamp has some really cool options available! I dream of a camping trailer….

  8. Oh, I’m so glad you liked All Creatures! I did too. Last night I nearly cried at the ending. I still don’t know if I like this Tristan better than the original — a tough act to follow — but he has his own charm of it so it’s not a matter of better or worse. Just different. And I think I’m a little in love with Siegfried!

  9. Camping Tips w kids, we used to take the kids when they were young quite often.

    # Give Wyatt a whistle around his neck while you’re camping since there won’t be anyone else around, he can blow it if he wanders too far away, or sees something worrying. Plus if you have one too, teach him to blow his whistle in response to hearing your whistle so it’s easy to locate him.

    # Give Wyatt his own torch to look after.. he’ll feel more comfortable about the dark… you might also want to make sure there is a night light for the tent.

    # A dustpan and broom set is convenient and works best for brushing sand, grass etc off feet, clothes etc to stop tracking it into the tent or car.

    # Prep as much food as you can at home before going to make meals to heat up, rather than cook from scratch. Depending on how long you are going for you can freeze things like breakfast wraps or cook things like burger patties you only need to then heat up on the bbq plate. Saves time, effort and money.

I will do it though because that getting away from us sounds terrifying! And I am going to look up some easy camping food, thanks! 🙂

  11. The camping trip looks like a great birthday present, your son will be excited ! My last attempt at camping was years ago and our tent was carried away by the wind in the middle of the night, so I’ll offer no advice except use good pitons, lol. And if you use an inflatable mattress, use a pump that you don’t need to pump manually (or a double action pump). Have a great week 🙂
